Throughout its 165-year history, Burberry has always remained in touch with its heritage of design and fine craftsmanship, while invigorated by the future in its creativity and innovation. The same philosophy runs through its beauty branch, its collection of makeup products quintessentially British in its effortless polish while maintaining a sense of bold individuality.
As Isamaya Ffrench, Burberry’s global beauty director, shared when her appointment was announced, “The Burberry girl for me is this duality of classic Britishness with this really eccentric side – the punk that can wear the trench coat.”
For the launch of the new Burberry Kisses Matte lipstick collection, Ffrench hosted a make-up masterclass, demonstrating two custom looks using the new lip colours. Enriched with hyaluronic acid, the matte lipsticks keep lips hydrated while maintaining its strong pigment for up to eight hours.
In true Burberry style, Ffrench created timeless looks elevated with a contemporary twist, such as a classic bright red lip in an ombre gradient, and a soft coral lip with an underside winged liner. Keep reading for all the tips and tricks to get the Burberry it-girl look.
Red Ombre lip look
Step 1 – Base
After prepping the face with the Fresh Glow Foundation, apply a Matte Glow Powder around the face as a primer. Ffrench recommends gently powdering around the mouth area as well as under the eyes.
“When you apply your lipstick, it’s really important that the line of your mouth is not too greasy or has any kind of wetness to it, as that makes the make-up really stay in place and hold really well,” says Ffrench.
Step 2 – Eyebrows
To build and shape the eyebrows, take an eyebrow pencil and lightly fill them in.
“It’s really important when you’re working with a brow product that the pencil is quite soft, you don’t want to load the brow with too much product,” advises Ffrench, who uses the Effortless Eyebrow Definer in barley for this look.
“I always recommend when you’re using a brow pencil, that you go with a cooler tone rather than a warmer tone, so stay away from browns,” she notes about choosing the right eyebrow pencil. Cooler tones are better at mimicking the shadows underneath the brow hairs, creating a more natural look.
Step 3 – Eye shadow
Using the rose pink Complete Eye Palette, Ffrench goes in with a light, creamier colour over the eyelids, serving as a highlighter around the eyes. Following this, add a pink hue over the lash line.
“Pinks are a really great way to introduce a little hint of colour and keep it feeling quite natural, because we have pinks in our skin already,” she says.
Finally, add a shimmery shade on top of the lid, the inner corner of the eye, cheekbones and on the cupid’s bow to create shape and dimension around the mouth.
Step 4 – Lips
To create the ombre centerpiece of this look, start with the oxblood Kisses Matte lipstick, drawing around the lip line with a brush.
“Sometimes a brush is helpful, especially if you want to create an ombre effect, because you can control the dimension of it,” shares Ffrench. “A brush is often helpful because it can help with keeping things quite clean, making your lines a bit sharper.”
She also recommends that instead of applying a ton of lip balm, prime the lips by doing a lip scrub, adding a bit of lip balm, and then some powder around the edges of the mouth.
After this, apply crimson red Kisses Matte lipstick on the inside of the lined lip. By adding a gradient, the pop of bright crimson helps give dimension and volume, making the look more interesting and dynamic.
Peony pink lip look with underside winged eyeliner
Step 1 – Base
Prep the face with a Fresh Glow Foundation, then use Matte Glow Powder around the face to prime it for make up. Gently powder around the mouth and under the eyes.
With the Essential Glow Palette in mid to dark tones, apply some highlight shade onto the cupid’s bow to prep the lip and create extra dimension.
Step 2 – Lips
Apply the peony pink Kisses Matte Lipstick onto the lips, and then tidy up the shape using a small brush.
“This is a nice everyday lip, if you want a bit of colour but something quite soft, it’s really one of those English Garden colours that I really love and that feels very Burberry.”
Ffrench then suggests enhancing the matte lip colour by layering the signature gold Kisses Satin on top, sweeping across the middle section of the lips. After this, add some highlight at the centre of the lip, which will add dimension and a dramatic finish.
“It’s a great system because you start with a matte that provides really good coverage, really hydrating and moisturising, then you go in with a little bit of sheen just in the middle the lips, and then finish by sealing it with a little bit of powder and then your lips are set forever,” says Ffrench.
Step 3 – Cheeks
Take a big fluffy brush and dust the coral shade from the Essential Glow Palette across the cheekbones to add a luminous effect on the skin.
“This look builds into that essential Burberry look – the very polished, elevated skin, with something quite fresh and classic but still interesting,” adds Ffrench.
Step 4 – Winged liner
Line the eyes with a kohl pencil along the lash line. Ffrench suggests using black combined with a grey shade which pairs well with the softer hued coral and gold.
Using the smokey grey Complete Eye Palette, blend out the black liner with a small brush. For the flick, follow the lower lash line and taper it up to create a centimeter-long wing.
“If you have slightly heavier lids, sometimes it can be quite hard to achieve a cat liner, as you’re working on the top, but this is great for everybody, because you’re just working with the bottom line of the eye,” she notes.
To finish, blend foundation or concealer under the eyes to clean up the winged liner look, and gently add some of the shimmery powder to the lips to add dimension.
