Coined by Brandon Huntly on TikTok in December 2021, ‘blokecore’ is the latest fashion trend to sweep social media, and describes a look comprising a vintage football jersey and a pair of jeans or shorts – think Liam and Noel Gallagher, of the English rock band Oasis, in the mid 1990s.
We can thank the internet for this sporty iteration of the microtrends with anti-fashion roots that dominate the platform (see ‘barbiecore‘ and ‘quiet luxury‘). While the concept may seem basic, sportswear has become increasingly of interest within the luxury fashion space. Major athletic apparel brand adidas has produced a number of collaborations with top design houses like Prada, Gucci and Balenciaga. adidas was also the first brand to work with English designer Grace Wales Bonner, founder of the homonymous brand Wales Bonner, in 2019.
An ode to big fits, half-zips, primary colours, and retro sportswear brands, ‘blokecore’ is a celebration of the fashion codes associated with soccer (or football) subcultures. Typical examples of the trend pair the chosen jersey with trainers, jeans or trousers. But what started as a nostalgia-fueled men’s fashion movement is now more about mix-matching football kits in stylish ways. Think: a sporty zip-up paired with mini skirts and ballet flats, kitten heels or trainers.
There’s also the Samba effect. The adidas Sambas – the slender indoor football shoes, which was revived by Wales Bonner has been all over Instagram and TikTok since the collaboration between the two brands. As the main shoe of the ‘blokecore’ look, the model continues to sell out in every colour, reselling for its original price or more.

Now, we can see celebrities like Bella Hadid incorporating elements of ‘blokecore’ into their personal styles, subtly hinting at the sportswear influence without letting it dominate an outfit. It’s also worth mentioning that certain football jerseys have become highly sought-after collector’s items for fashion enthusiasts. Limited edition drops and collaborations with streetwear brands have elevated the status of these jerseys, making them incredibly desirable and exclusive.
Anyhow, it’s kind of a relief whenever sportswear takes hold, as it means comfort first.
