They look like the plastic bags and canvas totes you see at the supermarket, except with a designer label and price tag.
There are it bags you want to add to your shopping cart, and then there are it bags that are your shopping cart…at the flea market. Or the grocery store. Or your regular night market.
What are we talking about? Only one of Spring 2018’s biggest bag trends: “supermarket shopper bags”. They look like the plastic bags and canvas totes you see at the supermarket, except with a designer label and price tag (remember Balenciaga’s $2,145 IKEA tote?).
But what may seem like a fashion faux pas years ago is actually becoming quite the trend this year. These are the bags that you can proudly carry to the mall, to fashion events, AND to the supermarket – if that’s what you want.
After its debut on the SS18 runways last year, the Céline Vinyl Tote will finally be available for $750 at the Céline x Nordstrom pop-up this May. That's about RM2,929 for a transparent plastic bag, by the way.
Besides Celine, Christopher Bailey's final collection for Burberry also included a series of colourful plastic bags. There's no news yet as to when it will be available for sale and how much will it go for, though (hopefully not anywhere near Celine's price tag).
Ashish's sequinned cotton tote may be one of the most glamourous shopping bags we've seen thus far, but we probably won't go anywhere near the supermarket with this (lest we confuse the cashier).
We've already spotted the Dior Book Tote Bag on the streets and Instagram, so there's proof yet that you can rock supermarket bags wherever you want.
Straw bags are still in trend; they've just gotten more colourful and shopper-friendly as Loeffler Randall demonstrates.
Just in case you thought the trend will die off by fall, we had to add Balenciaga's Fall/Winter '18 runway plastic bag into this list. Yup, looks like we'll still be seeing this trend next season.
