Bunnahabhain stands apart in a region known for its peated whiskies, boasting a portfolio predominantly of non-peated expressions. With a number of awards under its belt, Bunnahabhain’s range continues to impress whisky lovers worldwide. And when it comes to whisky celebrations in Scotland, few events command the reverence of Fèis Ìle, Islay’s renowned festival celebrating its rich distilling heritage.
Founded in 1881, Bunnahabhain holds a special place on Islay’s whisky map, known not just for its exceptional spirits but for its unique location. Situated on the island’s most remote northern point, overlooking the wild waters of the Sound of Islay, the distillery was once accessible only by boat, with daily shipments of whisky heading back to the mainland. The name ‘Bunnahabhain’ – Gaelic for ‘mouth of the river’ – pays homage to the Margadale River, whose pure spring water flows into Islay’s tallest stills, creating the distillery’s signature light-coloured malts.
The masterminds behind these exceptional whiskies is Bunnahabhain’s veteran distillery manager, Andrew Brown, who was in Malaysia – and Asia for the first time ever – to introduce the bottlings, and who celebrates 35 years with the distillery, alongside master blender Julieann Fernandez. Together, they’ve crafted these unique editions to capture the essence of Bunnahabhain while honouring the distinct character of Islay whisky. Speaking about the Fèis Ìle tradition, Brown remarked, “Fèis Ìle is a true celebration of everything that makes Islay whisky so special; the community, the craftsmanship, and the heritage. Every year, I am blown away by the number of people who make the pilgrimage to Bunnahabhain – from our most loyal visitors to new friends, all of whom have a shared passion for whisky.”
Echoing his sentiments, Fernandez emphasised how this year’s releases maintain Bunnahabhain’s celebrated sherried style, “With our Ruby Port Cask and Triple Sherry Wood Finish releases, we are staying true to Bunnahabhain’s renowned sherried style while delivering something special for this year’s festival.”
The 14-Year-Old Ruby Port Cask Finish
Bottled at an impressive 58.7% ABV, the 14-year-old Ruby Port Cask Finish is a bold yet harmonious expression of Bunnahabhain’s signature creamy, malty spirit with a twist. The whisky is first matured in bourbon casks before being finished in Ruby Port Hogsheads, resulting in a delicious dram brimming with candied fruit notes, cinnamon, and plum. These flavours intertwine with dark chocolate and cherries, culminating in a lingering spicy finish with bold hits of red berries. This edition stays true to the essence of Bunnahabhain, while offering an exciting new profile for connoisseurs.
The 23-Year-Old Triple Sherry Wood Finish
For those seeking an even more aged and intricate dram, the 23-year-old Triple Sherry Wood Finish is a masterclass in sherry maturation. Distilled in 1999 and bottled at 53.3% ABV, this cask-strength release brings together the best of Amontillado, Manzanilla, and Oloroso sherry casks. Fernandez skilfully marries these influences, creating a whisky that unfolds like a journey of discovery with each sip. Expect a burst of sherry complemented by creamy fudge, vanilla pods, and a subtle hint of tobacco, resulting in a distinctive dram perfect for toasting any occasion.
Both releases, in their limited quantities, are now available to Malaysian whisky aficionados. The 14-year-old Ruby Port Cask Finish retails at RM699, while the 23-year-old Triple Sherry Wood Finish is priced at RM2,390. As the distillery celebrates another year of Fèis Ìle, these limited-edition releases are not just a tribute to the art of whisky-making, but a testament to Bunnahabhain’s enduring legacy – a brand deeply rooted in tradition yet always pushing the boundaries of flavour. Both releases are now available in Malaysia, exclusively through Single & Available.
