Here are some watches we spotted at the Olympic Games, on some of the world’s greatest competitive athletes and cultural icons as they converged in the French capital.
Novak Djokovic – Hublot Big Bang MECA-10
One of the world’s greatest tennis players, Djokovic made history this year by finally getting his Olympic gold, after multiple years of trials and tribulations. And the watch he chose to wear to this historic podium was the Hublot Big Band MECA-10 in a gorgeous blue ceramic finish, which served to bring out the gold in his medal.
Serena Williams – Audemars Piguet Royal Oak Double Balance Wheel Openworked Steel 41MM
Another sporting legend rocking a great timepiece, Serena Williams paired her bright red Dolce & Gabanna dress with the AP Royal Oak Double Balance Wheel Openworked. The silver steel was a perfect accessory against the red lace, chiffon, and silk number that completed her look for the Opening Ceremony.
Rafael Nadal – Richard Mille RM27-05 Manual Winding Flying Tourbillon Rafael Nadal Carbon TPT B.4
Rafael Nadal was in attendance at the Opening Ceremony and was a surprise celebrity addition to the Paris 2024 Olympics list of torchbearers. His watch of choice to accompany him for the momentous occasion was his own Richard Mille RM27-05 Flying Tourbillon, which he continued to wear on the clay courts for all his doubles and singles matches during the Games.
Carlos Alcaraz – Rolex DayDate 40 in 18K Yellow Gold with black dial
Spanish tennis player Carlos Alcaraz might have taken home the silver medal at the Olympics, but he was definitely rocking gold in the form of the Rolex DayDate 40 in 18K Yellow Gold on his wrist.
Noah Lyles – Omega Speedmaster ‘Dark Side of the Moon’ Apollo 8
We found it fitting that Noah Lyles, who took home the men’s 100m sprint gold, was toting a Speedmaster during his race. This particular model, the Apollo 8, is a stunning piece that features the moon’s face on the dial, carved from black ceramic, and a moon-textured laser engraving on the movement itself.
LeBron James – Audemars Piguet Royal Oak Tourbillon Extra-Thin with Sapphire set bezel
Sticking to the colours of the USA’s flag, we’re sure that LeBron James chose this sapphire-set AP Royal Oak Tourbillon for that flash of blue – or maybe he just has good taste in watches. Paired with the Ralph Lauren white blazer-and-denim uniform worn for the Opening Ceremony, this piece must have shined through the rain while James carried the flag during the parade.
Lewis Hamilton – Patek Philippe Nautilus 5740 Perpetual Calendar White Gold
Spotted in the stands supporting American fencer and bestie Miles Chamley-Watson’s finals match, F1 legend Lewis Hamilton wore the Patek Philippe Nautilus 5740. Among the watches he owns, and could have worn to the Olympic Games, he chose well to coordinate the steel case and blue dial with his Chamley-Watson sweatshirt.
Léon Marchand – Omega Speedmaster Chronoscope
Another Omega timepiece got its time in the spotlight, this time on the wrist of celebrated French swimmer Léon Marchand. Marchand took home four gold medals and one bronze across six swimming events in the Paris games, while also setting four Olympic records with each of his gold medal wins in the 200m butterfly, 200m breaststroke, 200m individual medley, and the 400m individual medley events. A Speedmaster indeed!
Pharrell Williams – Richard Mille RM UP-01 Ferrari
Pop culture and fashion icon Pharrell Williams also rocked up to the Paris 2024 Opening Ceremony festivities with an iconic timepiece – the Richard Mille RM UP-01 Ferrari. This ultra-flat movement is a technological marvel in the realm of horology, measuring only 1.75mm thin. One of the more interesting watches spotted at the Olympic Games this year.
Spike Lee – Rolex Cosmograph Daytona
American film director Spike Lee was also in Paris to cheer on Team USA. Spotted at both the basketball preliminaries (in Lakers colours no less) and the artistic gymnastics events, Lee’s gold-and-black Cosmograph Daytona stole the show for us. Lee is a known Daytona collector, and this model with the now-discontinued meteorite dial is just one of the rarer pieces he’s sure to have.
Armand Duplantis – Omega Seamaster Aqua Terra 150M Titanium 41MM
Armand ‘Mondo’ Duplantis wore his Omega Seamaster Aqua Terra during his World Record-breaking 6.25m pole vault; a feat that also bagged him the gold medal in Paris by a whopping 30cm difference against the silver medalist Sam Kendricks. The yellow strap (which we thought was a custom strap at first, but has since been put up for sale as a limited piece tribute to Mondo and his world record feat) really emphasises the Swedish national flag colours of blue and yellow featured on the watch face.
Tommy Paul – De Bethune DB28xs ‘Starry Seas’ Titanium 38.7MM
In a sea of Omega, Rolex, and Richard Mille watches in the 2024 Olympic Games, American tennis player and winner of the bronze medal in the men’s doubles event Tommy Paul chose to wear the De Bethune DB28xs (with red strap to complete that red-white-blue colourway). Lightweight, highly durable and featuring a smaller 38.7mm case, this titanium watch seems like the perfect watch for a fast and hard game of tennis.
Keep a watch out for more timepieces here.
