Led by Suntory’s award-winning chief blender Shinji Fukuyo, the exclusive, limited-edition collection showcases four distinct expressions, each highlighting the rich craftsmanship and diverse flavours that have become the hallmark of Suntory whisky.
The 2024 Tsukuriwake Series introduces Yamazaki Golden Promise, Yamazaki Islay Peated Malt, Yamazaki 18 Year Old Mizunara, and Hakushu 18 Year Old Peated Malt. Together, these four whiskies reflect the artisan approach to blending and innovation led by Suntory’s fifth-generation chief blender, Shinji Fukuyo, who was recently named Master Blender of the Year at the International Spirits Challenge 2024.
Fukuyo’s leadership of the Tsukuriwake Series stems from the core philosophy of “artisanship through diversity.” This belief drives the exploration of unique ingredients and maturation processes that push the boundaries of Japanese whisky, while respecting its traditions.
One of the highlights of this series is the Yamazaki Golden Promise. This expression is crafted from Golden Promise barley, a heritage grain first cultivated in Scotland. It imparts a rich, malty character to the whisky, enhanced by its aging in American oak casks, delivering luscious notes of orange marmalade and custard.
The Yamazaki Islay Peated Malt showcases a softer, sweeter take on the iconic peat flavours of Islay whiskies, combining them with the delicate water and unique climate of Yamazaki. The result is a sophisticated blend of smoky complexity, sweet brown sugar, and hints of bitter orange.
For those seeking an ultra-premium experience, the Yamazaki 18 Year Old Mizunara offers a masterpiece in whisky craftsmanship. Aged in rare Mizunara oak casks, this whisky is prized for its spiced orange, sandalwood, and coconut notes, all culminating in a long, elegant finish. The distinctive character of Mizunara oak is part of what makes this expression a collector’s dream.
Meanwhile, the Hakushu 18 Year Old Peated Malt carries forward the tradition of the Hakushu distillery, offering an interplay of herbaceous freshness and subtle smokiness, with peppery undertones. This expression evokes the serenity of a forest, making it both refreshing and complex.
This series is available in Malaysia at select premium retailers and exclusive venues, including Kampachi EQ Kuala Lumpur, and The Chamber. For a more intimate tasting experience, The Private Chamber offers a whisky flight and canapé pairing at RM988 per person.
With limited availability and high demand expected, enthusiasts are encouraged to act swiftly. Collectors can also purchase the entire series for RM29,999, making this a must-have for those serious about the art of whisky.
