In yet another not-to-be-missed designer collaboration of 2020, Gucci has partnered with The North Face for a collection that will make you want to go camping for the chance to wear it. First teased in September via a video revealing a “The North Face x Gucci” flag blowing in the breeze, the full collection is finally revealed along with a dreamy campaign to show for it.
Marrying the outdoor-savvy expertise of the American recreational products company with the flamboyance of the Florentine fashion house, the resulting collection underscores their mutual themes of exploration, self-discovery and commitment to sustainability.
Inspired by the ‘70s, the pieces feature The North Face’s iconic quarter-circle stamp – which pays homage to the famed granite Half Dome in Yosemite National Park – in Gucci’s signature green-red-green stripe. You’ll find this emblazoned across ready-to-wear, accessories and outdoor recreation pieces from padded coats and windbreakers to backpacks and tents.
There are skirts, co-ords, sweaters and shirts interpreted with floral prints, true to Gucci’s house style. Accessories are aplenty too – spanning luggage adorned in graphic motifs, bucket hats and beanies, hiking boots and sleeping bags – all in the decade’s vivid colourways.
To capture the spirit of the collection, the campaign imagery was shot in the Alps by photographer Daniel Shea. If you remember the fashion house’s sustainability-championing Off The Grid campaign, this looks and feels ten times more outdoorsy. But that’s not all; following the reveal, Gucci hinted at yet another collaboration which will see the collection in augmented reality form. Taking to Twitter, the brand posted a Pokémon GO logo marked flag not unlike its initial teaser, with the caption: “Coming soon on @PokemonGoApp. #TheNorthFaceXGucci.”

Not much else has been unveiled as of yet, but based on previous in-game events, it’s likely that Niantic will program pieces from the team-up into the game for characters to wear. This isn’t new for Gucci or Pokemon GO, both of which have seen the gamification of fashion elements this year. Needless to say, we gotta catch ‘em all.
If this is how creative and innovative fashion can be at the end of a pandemic-stricken year, we’re excited for more to come in 2021.
