The fourth season of the highly anticipated Netflix series Emily in Paris debuted last Thursday (15 August), much to our guilty pleasure. Nobody asked, but yes, we binge-watched all five episodes of part one in one sitting (for the purpose of this article, of course). And just as you’d expect, the fashion is bigger and bolder this season.
For a quick recap, the season picks up after the cliffhanger that season three left us with – an affair, a called-off wedding, and a pregnancy. Are Emily Cooper (Lily Collins) and Alfie (Lucien Laviscount) still together? Or will Camille’s (Camille Razat) shocking revelation at the altar lead the American back to her first Parisian love, Gabriel (Lucas Bravo)? What lies in store for the newly formed Agence Grateau? How will Mindy and her band fund their trip to Eurovision?
No spoilers here; we’ll leave those juicy details for you to find out – except for their wardrobe choices. According to Netflix, season four features 2,500 pairs of shoes (including 150 pairs of Louboutins), 350 designer handbags, and about 3,000 pieces of jewellery. As for Emily, specifically, expect her signature colourful palette, but with more mature, European influences reflecting a woman who’s coming into her own in a city she’s growing more attuned with.
“It’s always a challenge from one season to the next, and you have to renew yourself,” the show’s costume designer, Marilyn Fitoussi, said on the transition. “I want to see clothing and accessories that make me dream, that are unaffordable, inaccessible. Yes, it’s true that Emily can’t afford all the clothes on offer in the show, of course. No, her apartment can’t hold all the clothes. And that’s entertainment, baby!”
With that in mind, here’s a look at some of the standout fashion moments from Emily in Paris Season Four Part One.
Café chic
Despite her relationship woes, Emily looked très chic in her first appearance wearing a green jacquard floral shorts and bustier set from Philosophy di Lorenzo Serafini. She paired the look with a pink Jacquemus cardigan, a matching Kate Spade New York gingham tote, and a pair of Nodaleto mesh Mary Jane pumps.
Lucky stripes
If there’s anyone who could pull off red and white stripes without looking like they belong at the circus, it’s Emily. Here, she wears a cotton suit from Tara Jarmon with a La Fetiche red silk shirt underneath and a matching Lastelier hat to boot.
Matching in monochrome
Who doesn’t love a good monochrome moment? Better yet, make it double! Mindy and Emily nailed this trend together like true BFFs, with the former wearing a blue Mugler blazer dress accessorised with a Germanier bag and thigh-high metallic blue boots from Christian Louboutin’s sold-out collaboration with Marvel.
Meanwhile, the latter dons an all-yellow ‘fit comprising a sheer Marlene Birger ruffled blouse, Isabel Marant corduroy miniskirt, and glossy Possery jacket. She also paired the look with a Silvia Tcherassi fringed purse, yellow checkered Marni socks, and Sergio Rossi platform heels.
Feeling the blues
Royal blue has been a consistent colour choice through the seasons. In episode two, Emily brings it back with a full blazer, shirt and pants getup from Parisian designer label Barbara Bui. She completes the look with a Pierre Hardy handbag and Rabanne Chelsea boots that altogether screams ‘boardroom boss’.
Playing with graffiti
Mindy’s outfits definitely deserve more time in the spotlight this season, with this graffiti-inspired Philipp Plein set catching our attention. The Eurovision-bound singer capped it off with a Ruslan Baginskiy sailor hat and a metallic blue Ganni bag.
Masquerade muse
Think Hamburglar but make it fashion. Emily shows up at a masquerade ball in a bespoke striped bodysuit and open-front skirt by Nina Ricci, but there’s another guest there with the exact same outfit. While some may see this as a fashion faux pas, Emily and her outfit twin veered towards the idea that great minds think alike… until a case of mistaken identity later that evening.
Little black dress(es)
Amidst the vibrant colours and eye-catching patterns, this season also saw a number of elegant LBDs. Two of our favourite pieces are captured in this scene of the opening of Laurent’s new nightclub. Sylvie looks stunning in this sophisticated Christopher Esber dress with a sculptural neckline, while Emily adds her signature pop of colour in a floral Balmain Spring/Summer 2024 number.
Bonus: Travelling in style
While this outfit doesn’t appear in part one, here’s a sneak peek at what might happen in part two. Emily is seen wearing an Isabel Marant Étoile faux shearling coat with brown leather Christian Louboutin over-the-knee boots, a Soeur bag, and a sailor-style hat. The cornflower blue Rimowa bag behind her indicates that she’s probably on vacation.
Where is she travelling to and who does she meet there? A little bird told us about a new eye candy by the name of Marcello (Eugenio Franceschini), but we’ll have to wait until part two drops to learn more.
