Dyson has pledged to donate 5,000 units of the 15,000 ventilators scheduled for production – 1,000 of which will benefit the UK.
Not long after the launch of its revolutionary new hair straightener, the Corrale, Dyson is making headlines again by announcing a new ventilator designed to aid in the fight against the COVID-19 pandemic.
The announcement follows an order from the UK government for 10,000 ventilators to support efforts by its National Health Service (NHS) to treat patients infected by the coronavirus. In just 10 days, Dyson has managed to design and build a new ventilator in partnership with medical device company, The Technology Partnership (TTP).
Dubbed CoVent, the ventilator is portable, doesn’t require a fixed air supply and can easily be mounted to a patient’s bed, making it one of the most in-demand devices at present. It is powered by the Dyson Digital Motor – which is also used in other Dyson technology including its haircare tools and cord-free vacuums) – and has been specially re-engineered to meet the requirements of the ventilator.
Drawing from the brand’s air purifier expertise to deliver high-quality filtration in high-volume products, the ventilator will serve to conserve oxygen using a ‘rebreathe circuit’. This will be helpful in assisting patients who require assistance in breathing, especially in severe cases where the respiratory system has been impaired.
Experts from the NHS and Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) were involved throughout the process to ensure the machine’s safety and efficacy.
“The core challenge was how to design and deliver a new, sophisticated medical product in volume and in an extremely short space of time,” the brand said in a statement. “This new device can be manufactured quickly, efficiently and at volume. The race is now on to get it into production.”
According to CNN, Dyson has pledged to donate 5,000 units of the 15,000 ventilators scheduled for production – 1,000 of which will benefit the UK. Production is expected to complete by early April.
The announcement adds Dyson to the list of brands and business magnates that have pledged donations and resources to help combat the global outbreak of COVID-19.
