Ethereal dimensions captivate senses in immersive art, a now global phenomenon that has pervaded the creative scene. The distinctive feature of these art installations lies in their capacity of creating a multi-sensory contexture for viewers, one which they are wholly transported into as part of the artistic journey. Sowing this inventive art form upon Malaysian soil is REXKL’s very own digital art gallery, REXPERIENCE (RXP.KL) whose newest art exhibition, Piying Dream, is bound to shine.
Piying Dream: 一夢華胥 (A Dream of Huaxu)
The ancient art of Chinese shadow play grounds Piying Dream, an original showcase mounted by Danny Rose Studio and Temple of Light that is at once novel and unrivalled. Conceived using over 3,000 intricately crafted shadow puppets from the Qing Dynasty to today, the showcase reimagines the traditional art within a first-of-its-kind setting. The immersive exhibition brings to life legendary characters from Chinese literature – including the much-adored Sun Wukong (or Monkey King) and the valiant Wu Song – as they emerge around the projection-mapped room in an orchestrated manner that is both neat yet dynamic, and entirely absorbing.
Alongside these characters, antique Chinese structures, beautiful flora and fauna as well as mythical dragons come into view throughout the exhibition. Entwining vibrant tones and iconic figures from a time-honoured art form amidst serene Chinese instrumentals, Piying Dream fabricates a magical world that overwhelms viewers with wonder.
The masterpiece experiential installation features two other immersive artworks, adding lustre to the affair – Into the Blue and The Matter of Painting.
Into the Blue (Interlude)
Enlivening the interval, a short exhibition takes over the space, where light and colour transform into tools of hypnosis. With its diffused beams superimposed, what manifests is a burst of arresting geometries that move around the walls. The ephemeral aspect of the experience is accented through an original score that lulls the viewers into a state of musing.
The Matter of Painting
Step into a spectacle of continually-morphing art in The Matter of Painting, a remarkable creation of Danny Rose Studio. Drawing inspiration from the Action Painting movement that sparked in 1950s New York City, the showcase is helmed by an ‘invisible digital artist’ who seamlessly experiments with a plethora of hues and textures. Incorporating a music concept by Sergio Carrubba and an original composition by Emanuele de Raymondi, The Matter of Painting is a live performance par excellence. The walls of RXP.KL become a canvas of entrancing visuals upon which perceptions are altered and the boundaries between the art and observer are shattered.
Speaking on the art exhibition, Sébastien Jurkowski, Co-founder of REXPERIENCE commented: “These dazzling creations promise to transport visitors to a realm where technology and art coalesce into an otherworldly experience, stimulating the senses and evoking a profound emotional response, leaving them awestruck.”
The 1-hour exhibition is now open to the public daily from 10 am to 10 pm until 6 September 2024. For more information and to purchase tickets, visit RXP.KL.
