The 3.9-litre, turbo-charged Ferrari V8 is not only International Engine of the Year, but the past 20 years.
For the past two years, Ferrari has come out of the International Engine of the Year Awards with the greatest honour on the roll – International Engine of the Year. This year, the Italian marquee raked in six awards, bringing its grand total to 27.
The 2018 International Engine of the Year Awards saw Ferrari V8 claim two top prizes. Ferrari 488 Pista’s 3.9-litre unit won International Engine of the Year (for the third year in a row), while earning the Best of the Best among all winners over the past 20 years.
Dean Slavnich, co-chairman of the IEOTY Awards, says, “In the 488 GTB, the 3.9-litre eight-cylinder was a near-perfect example of a high-performance turbocharged engine, setting the bar so high that it swept aside rival powertrains. But redeveloped and tweaked for the 488 Pista, the best engine in the world just got better. Without doubt, we’re looking at an engineering masterclass from Ferrari. No turbo lag, beautiful delivery, raw emotion, a furious growl and so much power – this Ferrari V8 is a work of art.”
On top of that, Ferrari V8 also took the 3-litre to 4-litre class and Performance Engine category. The 6.5-litre V12 in the 812 Superfast also bagged two awards: the Above 4-litre class, and the Best New Engine category. It qualified for the latter after a 75% overhaul from the 6.3-litre unit found in the Ferrari F12berlinetta.
