'Tis the season to wear cherry red. Here's how to rock it

Red is an exhortation to extraversion, a love letter to living out loud. The legendary former Vogue editor-in-chief, Diana Vreeland, once said: “Red is the great clarifier: bright, cleansing and revealing. It makes all colours beautiful. I can’t imagine becoming bored with red – it would be like becoming bored with the person you love.” A notoriously hard-to-pull-off colour that’s often linked to intense feelings of passion and anger, as well as crime scenes and of course, love.

While cherry red has always been revered as a classic addition to any outfit, it’s no secret that it has been infiltrating the fashion world at an astronomical level this season. The Fall/Winter 2023 runway saw its fair share of this hue, with brands like Tory Burch, Alexander McQueen, Ferragamo and Valentino featuring the shade in their shows. The standout among the collections, though, was The Row’s collarless red coat and matching opera-length gloves.

Fashion followers, from models to celebrities like Emily Ratajkowski and Kylie Minogue, have also been spotted out and about flaunting cherry red ensembles, making the fiery hue the colour to know at the moment.

As a pop of colour, cherry red is perfect for giving an otherwise simple look a little more life. With the help of a red bag or shoes, a completely different outfit can be created in just a few simple steps. And while browns, greys and blacks have long been our go-to shades, you may want to try something new with your neutrals this season. Think: a white eyelet-detailed dress paired with cherry red ballet flats.
