“To use something ubiquitous like the paper clip and transform it into a beautiful object was a real challenge.” – Jacob Arabo
Back in 2017, Prada released a sterling silver paper clip-designed money clip that retailed for $185. That same year, designer Virgil Abloh teased a similar-looking paper clip accessory in collaboration with Jacob & Co, dubbed “Office Supplies”.
Three years later today, the latter partnership is finally launching a range of jewellery inspired by the humble paper clip. Symbolising unity, togetherness and an unbreakable bond much needed in the world right now, the ordinary paper clip meets the aspirational quality of a Rocafella chain in this collection comprising of bracelets, earrings, necklaces and money clips.
Each piece is made from 18k white, yellow or rose gold, with or without embedded white or yellow diamonds. In contrast to the watch and jewellery retailer’s usual elaborate, avant-garde designs, this collection elevates an everyday office item into striking, statement jewellery pieces for the upper class.
“In my watchmaking and jewelry work, I have been operating at the upper ends of the spectrum, reworking high complications in watches and changing the way jewelry was perceived,” Jacob Arabo, founder of Jacob & Co, said in a statement. “To use something ubiquitous like the paper clip and transform it into a beautiful object was a real challenge. I am proud of this first collection and I can’t wait to see the reaction from our clients.”
“With jewelry design, not only is technical sophistication important, but also lineage. That’s the foundation for pieces with meaning,” Abloh commented. “Jacob for me has always been innovative, particularly in the notions of merging design sophistication and the pop-culture emanating from the streets.”
The “Office Supplies” collection is available on a made-to-order basis, with a six-to-eight-week lead time. Interested parties may email officesupplies@canary—yellow.com to request the “Office Supplies” order form, subject to personal review and approval by Arabo and Abloh themselves.
