Style Staples is a monthly series where we dissect the best luxury bags to invest in. In this edition, we explore Loewe’s silhouettes to bring you the most timeless pieces that will always have a place in your life.
The Spanish luxury maison with a German name, Loewe is no stranger to those of us who appreciate a good leather bag for our grab-and-go accessory.
Founded in 1846, Loewe started as a leathermaking collective working out of Madrid, solidifying their expertise in crafting not just beautiful leather goods, but also innovative and technically advanced uses and construction codes.
Since then, and after being acquired by LVMH in 1996, the house has grown to be one of the biggest names in luxury fashion, and their signature designs create styles that walk the fine line between trendy and timeless.
In 2024, Loewe is represented by some of the biggest names in popular culture, including K-pop stars Giselle from Aespa, Taeyong from NCT, and all of NMIXX, as well as Jamie Dornan and Wang Yibo.
With Jonathan Anderson (of JW Anderson fame) at the helm as creative director since 2013, Loewe’s recent releases are quickly becoming classics too. The Spanish luxury maison offers styles that range across soft leather and structured leather, and here are six of Loewe’s iconic bags you should invest in when creating the perfect accessory closet.
Puzzle
One of Jonathan Anderson’s most iconic bag silhouettes, the Puzzle bag first made its debut in the Men’s Spring/Summer 2015 collection. It is made with nine separate leather pieces that are combined together to give the bag its instantly recognisable shape, while showing off the maison’s leather craft expertise all at once. The nine panelled pieces make the Puzzle a structured bag, but the way it is pieced together also allows for a slouchy, soft leather look at the same time.
Available in mini, small, medium, and large, as well as in the Puzzle Fold tote form.

Paseo
A more recent debut from Loewe, which we first saw in Spring/Summer 2023, the Paseo is a new classic. Its short and wide stature makes it a statement piece as much as a practical bag. In the same vein as the dumpling bag, we like to call this the croissant bag, owing to its shape and pleated silhouette that almost gives it that distinct croissant-like look. With the handle threaded through the bags, the Paseo is a hand bag in every form, but it also comes with a detachable strap for those to like the freedom of a shoulder bag.
Available in small, medium, large, and XL, and in the Paseo basket made with raffia and with taller silhouette.

Flamenco
With the Spanish name and a legacy dating back to the 1970s, the Flamenco just makes sense as a Loewe bag. The drawstring mechanism makes for a ruched design that’s fun-yet-chic, and combined with contrasting shiny chain strap and a soft leather look makes this a timeless design. The bag as we know it was relaunched in 2010 under the supervision of Stuart Vevers, and the now-signature knots on the end of the drawstring were added to the Flamenco purse to make it a distinctly Anderson piece as well.
Available in mini, the original medium, and large sizes, as well as in Flamenco Clutch and Flamenco Bucket shapes.

Amazona
This is another heritage piece from Loewe that was given new popularity – the Amazona handbag burst back into the fashion scene in 2021 when Anderson relaunched the silhouette for Loewe 175th anniversary. Despite that, the Amazona has actually been one of Loewe’s signature pieces since it first debuted in 1975. Clean, structured, practical and no-nonsense, the Amazona was launched for the modern woman (of the ’70s) who were increasingly leaving the home to occupy the workforce. Even today, they’re a reliable and favourite catch-all bag for the busy woman, and the functional padlock hardware makes for a fun bag charm too.
Currently available in 23, 28 and 44 sizes, but historically available in several more ranging from mini, 15, 16, 18, 36 and larger.

Gate
Loewe’s submission for a saddle-shaped signature is the Gate, which first walked the runway in Spring/Summer 2018. With saddle-stitching one of the most iconic leather craft techniques, you can trust the Gate to be that girl when it comes to representing that craftmanship to the world. The Gate got its name from the use of a metal pin on the side of the bag that holds the panels together and keeps the knotted leather strap on the front in place, allowing you to securely fasten the bag. An understated design that’s just so wearable with a pop of logomania from the jacquard strap, the Gate comes in all kinds of colours so you’re bound to find one for you.
Available in mini and small size.

Goya
The Goya bag became an instant favourite the moment it debuted back in 2021. One of the only true classic flap bags in Loewe’s catalogue of designs, the Goya is a perfect choice to complement any occasion, from an evening little black dress getup to super structured power suit fit. But if you’re looking for a little more whimsy on your shoulder, opt for one of their puffer designs, which turns the classic flap bag into a playful statement piece.
Available in small and medium, as well as in the Goya Puffer and Goya Puffer Weave designs.
