Kicking off the collection is the Limited Edition Superman Action Comics #1, a tribute to the first issue of the original run of the Action Comics series.
Homegrown century-old pewter brand Royal Selangor has given film and comic fans an entire catalogue of covetable collectibles from the Marvel universe to the Star Wars franchise. Now the brand is collaborating with Warner Bros. Consumer Products, on behalf of DC Entertainment, to unveil a new collection that pays homage to the most iconic superhero comic book covers in over 80 years of history.
Kicking off the collection is the Limited Edition Superman Action Comics #1, a tribute to the first issue of the original run of the Action Comics series. Published back in 1938, the cover features Superman – in the signature form-fitting blue suit and sweeping red cape that accentuates his well-built body – smashing a car he is effortlessly carrying with his bare hands.
It was the first comic book to sell at auction to the tune of US$1 million in 2010. Copies from the original print run continue to rank amongst the world’s most expensive comics, with one case fetching over US$3 million in 2014.
In honour of the historical graphic, illustrator Alan Quah and sculptor Mufizal Mokhtar worked together to immortalise the iconic superhero in pewter, emerging in 3D format with the remains of a vehicle in bonded porcelain. Under the car’s crumpled bodywork is a painstakingly modelled chassis and engine.
It is limited to only 800 pieces worldwide, promising an exclusive pride of place on an owner’s desk or display. The model is also available with a gilt finish juxtaposed against a black and white comic cover, which is limited to only 200 pieces.
Both limited-edition models were unveiled at the Sideshow Con on 20th July 2020 and are available at Royal Selangor retail stores, authorised dealers and at royalselangor.com.
