It was a night of many firsts.
The Academy Awards 2019 (popularly known as the Oscars) drew to a close this evening, marking many firsts in its history. For starters, this was the first Oscars in history that had no host after Kevin Hart stepped down amid controversy over homophobic jokes he had made in the past.
After the #OscarsSoWhite and Time’s Up movements that have been pushing for more diversity in Hollywood over the past couple of years, both in front of the screen and behind the scenes, we can see it pay off now. This year we witnessed people of colour and women taking home awards that have never been claimed by anyone from their identity group before.
Thanks to Black Panther, it was a significant night for black filmmakers. Black Panther production designer Hannah Beachler and costume designer Ruth E. Carter each became the first black women to win in their respective categories. (Beachler was the first black production designer to win, period.)
Peter Ramsey, one of the co-directors of the Best Animated Feature winner Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, was the first black director to win in the category. Mahershala Ali, who won Best Supporting Actor for Green Book, became the first black actor and a Muslim to win in that category twice. (And only the fifth black actor to win in the category over the course of the Academy Awards’ 91-year history.)
Black Panther, which picked up three wins out of its seven nominations, became the first Marvel Studios movie to win an Academy Award.
Though Roma and The Favourite led the nominations with 10 each on Sunday, it was Green Book that won Best Picture, with Rami Malek and Olivia Colman winning big in the best-acting categories.
