Just like how the infamous red lipstick is an irreplaceable makeup must-have for feminine and powerful moments, having a perfect nude shade on hand is no less essential. It’s a lip colour that can be worn literally at any time of the day and occasion – providing either an enhanced natural look or a subtle statement.
However, for too long the colour “nude” has been more catered towards fairer skin tones, and forgetting that nude is not a universal colour. While the show-stopping red can be easily picked out just by selecting the one with the right undertone, the nude colour itself is the colour of skin, of flesh – which come in a wide variety of tones. When a person of colour wanted to look for a go-to nude shade, the beauty industry’s definition of nude didn’t provide a match – oftentimes resulting in a look that’s too pink, too light, or too ashy.
Fortunately, the industry is making several big changes – albeit a little slow – and Black-owned brands such as Fenty Beauty, Juvia’s Place, and Uoma Beauty have helped pave the way for more inclusive makeup options. Lip products and nude shades are now being created with dark skin tones in mind – from rich, deep browns to peachy-caramel neutrals – in various finishes.
So if you’re someone who can relate to not being able to find your perfect nude, keep scrolling to discover some nude selections that work particularly well on darker skin tones. Just remember: blue veins mean cool-toned, green veins mean warm-toned, and a combination of both gives you a neutral advantage.
