Malaysian filmmaker Tan Chui Mui, who made her directorial debut in 2006 with Love Conquers All, is the latest director of Miu Miu Women’s Tales – a short-film series that supports original and profound female directors of the world. Titled I Am The Beauty Of Your Beauty, I Am The Fear Of Your Fear, the film follows Gita, a young woman grappling with her past and seeking solace in sisterhood in Malaysia. She wrestles her inner demons via martial arts, and through that, finds inner strength and beauty within.
According to Chui Mui, the film is about “a girl from China who comes to Malaysia to search for herself, but the search can only be inwards.” Throughout the film, she explores the multiple meanings of “self-defense” for a woman in the modern world, plagued by constant struggles. Through her friendship and support, Gita, who’s played by Chinese star Sdanny Lee, builds her physical and spiritual power. “Through wrestling with what we fear the most,” the director explains, “we find our inner strength, and we find our own beauty.”
Dressed head-to-toe in Miu Miu, the cast’s eclectic outfits are a sartorial representation of the characters they play. The women are seen wearing elevated leisurewear like bright-coloured sports bras and satin bermudas to statement pieces like collegiate-inspired blazers and knit tops.
