For his latest Spring/Summer collection, Khoon Hooi is inspired by the calla lily – an elegant flower that symbolises magnificent beauty. Titled ‘In Full Bloom’, the collection stays true to its name, embracing women being the most alluring when they ‘bloom’. Each piece celebrates the unique beauty of every woman of all shapes, colours and identities.
From this inspiration, the designer creates pieces that play on silhouette and volume. A-line and fit-and-flare shapes lend that easy breezy flair, while pencil and column dresses radiate that statuesque femininity. The notion of femininity is further explored with the necklines, as square, boat and asymmetrical necklines showcase one’s décolletage and collarbones. Co-ords that exude that effortless sense of ease round up the collection.
The pieces are further accentuated with a generous use of vibrant shades. Apart from brighter colours, the use of taffeta, brocade and satin fabrics in the collection enhance the strong romantic element that has become intrinsic to the brand. An up-and-coming trend, Khoon Hooi’s rendition is amped up with intricate crochet lace being used, playing up the texture. The collection is also highlighted with doses of crystals and beaded embellishments. The hero detail, the calla lily, is given the ultimate spotlight, whether subtly accentuating the belts, reinterpreted as sleeves or adorning the bodice as a whole.
The collection is highlighted by the pieces such as the ‘Calla’ corset pencil gown that flaunts the calla lily, the fit-and-flare ‘Ambretta’ midi dress and the brand’s signature black dress ‘Crisanta’, elevated with this season’s strap with a crystal buckle.
