In the current age where technology plays a significant role in our lives, it is crucial to acknowledge the importance of environmental sustainability alongside innovation. While thrift shopping and conscious eating are equally important, focusing on the sustainability of our gadgets should be a top priority due to their close proximity to us on a daily basis.
With that said, here’s how you can adopt a greener approach towards your daily gadget usage to leave behind a lighter ecological footprint.
1. Put them on pause
Practising eco-friendliness with your devices can be achieved by simply pausing their usage or switching them off whenever feasible. Set aside at least an hour every day for activities that do not require the use of electronics. Minimising screen time reduces the need for charging, thus reducing carbon technology consumption. This small adjustment can lead to a more significant impact on leading a greener lifestyle.
2. Renewable energy sources
You may want to think about shifting to renewable energy sources like solar, wind, or hydro for your gadgets and daily devices. Studies show that using renewable energy can lower your carbon footprint and cut costs on your future electricity bills. You can start by investing in portable solar chargers, rechargeable batteries, or power banks that can effectively decrease your electricity usage without depending on fossil fuels.
3. Out with the old
Do you have any outdated gadgets lying around? Consider recycling or selling your old gadgets instead of simply discarding them when you no longer use them. In Malaysia, brands such as Senheng/SenQ provide an E-Waste Recycling Programme. All you have to do is bring your non-bulky e-waste products to any of their locations nationwide and hand over your old electronics to one of their employees. In exchange, you’ll get cash vouchers.
Telecommunications company Maxis has also collaborated with ERTH, an authorised e-waste collector, to promote the E-Waste Campaign: Recycle Your Electronic Device. These brands are making a positive step by emphasising the potential dangers of e-waste on the environment and human health, if not handled properly.

4. Repair, not replace
If your device holds significant memories, it is advisable to repair and upkeep your devices to prolong their functionality rather than replacing them. In today’s fast-paced world, there is a trend of constantly replacing gadgets, cars, and furniture, contributing to harmful manufacturing processes, which is obviously not a good move for the future.
5. Start downloading
Did you know that streaming online — be it music, movies, or sports events — has caused a significant carbon footprint? According to a study in 2023, the average person streams around five hours of content per day, resulting in a staggering 1.57 million tonnes of carbon emissions released annually. However, you can make a positive impact by downloading content to your devices and enjoying it at your convenience. This way, you can enjoy your favourite entertainment without worrying about contributing to climate change.
6. Look for a greener gadgets
Start choosing gadgets and products that prioritise eco-friendly features. Be an educated consumer and expose yourself to brands that adhere to specific standards and policies promoting energy efficiency, recyclability, and reduced toxicity. The Climate Pledge website is a valuable resource to identify tech companies that have committed to achieving net-zero carbon emissions in their operations and manufacturing by 2040.
