Following its global premiere this time last year, Mercedes-Benz Malaysia (MBM) has finally announced the arrival of the all-new Mercedes-Benz GLA in the country. The entry-level model rounds off the automaker’s SUV porfolio, offering a compact alternative to the bigger GLB and GLC models launched earlier this year.

Launching in the GLA 200 and GLA 250 AMG variants, the two eighth generation H247 models come with a few key updates – namely a more dynamic character, increased space and greater convenience, which we’ll delve into later. But first, let’s talk powertrain.

Starting with the GLA 200 Progressive Line, the base variant is powered by a Renault-sourced M282 1.3-litre turbocharged 4-cylinder engine. Mated to a 7G-DCT automatic transmission, it is capable of producing 120 kw (163 hp) and a maximum torque of 250 Nm, achieving the century sprint in 8.7 seconds.

Meanwhile, the GLA 250 AMG Line features a 2.0-litre turbocharged 4-cylinder engine paired with the 8G-DCT automatic transmission. It rates at 165 kW (224 hp) with a maximum torque of 350 Nm, accelerating the car from 0-100 km/h in 6.9 seconds.

Dynamic character

At 4.41 metres long, the new GLA variants are the shortest in the brand’s SUV family, making them suited for city drives. But they’re also 10cm taller than the outgoing models, offering more balanced proportions as opposed to the previous jacked-up hatchback form. Both variants come with a similar front bumper, featuring a distinctive radiator grille with a single louvre and central star, as well as LED High Performance headlamps.

Short overhangs and underride guarding at the front and rear emphasise its dynamic character, whilst protective cladding add structure to the overall exterior. There’s a noticeable reduction in character lines, alongside a powerdome hood and accentuated planes that give the redesigned models an elegant, curvier aesthetic.

The GLA 200 is equipped with 18-inch 5-twin-spoke light-alloy wheels, whereas the GLA 250’s AMG Line bodystyling includes 19-inch alloy wheels.

Increased space and comfort

Given its raised height, the new GLA offers more headroom in the front seats. There’s increased legroom in the rear and luggage compartment, despite being 1.5cm shorter than its predecessor. Thanks to a slightly larger wheelbase, the boot is also 14 litres bigger, totalling 435 litres.

Additionally, the front seats are now higher and more upright than before, which is more typical of an SUV. The load floor is height-adjustable and the rear bench can be split 40:20:40 for better flexibility.

Greater convenience

Like other compact car cousins, both variants come with the Mercedes-Benz User Experience (MBUX) infotainment system. The instrument panel consists of two 10.25-inch displays fitted with the latest generation of Mercedes me connect as standard. Other driving assistance features include Active Brake Assist, PRE-SAFE® system and Blind Spot Assist (only in the GLA 250) for enhanced safety and convenience with every drive.

The new Mercedes-Benz GLA 200 and GLA 250 AMG are priced at RM244,199.82 and RM285,336.66 OTR without insurance respectively (while SST discounts are effective until 31^st December 2020). Beginning 2021, the prices will be adjusted to RM 252,888 and RM295,888 OTR without insurance respectively.
