There are many reasons as to why The RuMa Hotel and Residences is such a well-loved five-star sanctuary in the city. Above all, the sustainability-led hotel is one of only a handful of properties in Kuala Lumpur that operates with a strict environmental, social, and governance (ESG) policy in place. The hospitality establishment doesn’t just conserve the environment, but also preserves local culture and heritage, supports the local economy, and shares its sustainability efforts with key stakeholders alike, such as its beloved guests.
As a pioneering example of how luxury and sustainability can coexist harmoniously, The RuMa also affords a first-class guest experience across its array of comfortable rooms and suites. This hospitality also extends across its property, which is home to UR SPA, The Librari, SEVEN Lobby Bar, SANTAI Pool and Bar Lounge, and ATAS – its signature restaurant with an open kitchen concept that transforms from a venue serving up breakfast fare into a show kitchen for a more immersive dining experience during lunch and dinner.
We recently paid a visit to The RuMa to experience the reimagining of ATAS, which has adopted an European bistro identity with the promise of a revitalised dining experience. Its updated menu, now available, is set to charm epicureans with the essence of classic European fare through the creative lens of ATAS’ distinctive flair, all while showcasing the finest local produce in collaboration with independent farms. The RuMa, in line with its sustainability efforts, has also partnered with Tiny Greens, a local farm-to-table and pesticide-free microgreens and edible flower supplier, for the visually appealing finishing touches atop its culinary creations.
ATAS, helmed by Executive Chef Suhalmi Tasir, who is a pivotal member of the original ATAS opening team, endeavours to be an undisturbed haven amidst the bustling city centre, extending an inviting atmosphere where guests can come together, unwind and indulge. Both innovative and heartfelt, the menu incorporates seasonal and sustainably-sourced produce into simple yet elegant European specialties prepared with a modern twist that reflects the restaurant’s innovative spirit. Additionally, the MIBRASA wood burning oven further draws out the richness and depth of flavour of the culinary team’s elevated offerings.
A set lunch is also on offer, but we were treated to an indulgent seven-course dinner experience that kicked off with European Prawn Croquettes, a Bresaola Tortellini Salad, and Pomodoro Flat Bread, on top of some delectable sourdough bread and maple wood butter. These starters were served in a communal style at the centre of the table for sharing, featuring varying textures and flavours for an appetite-inducing and delightful mouthfeel.
Next came the Seafood Bouillabaisse Soup that was teeming with Provencal underwater bounty like fresh clams, prawns, fish and squid in a rich tomato-based broth. To cleanse the palate prior to the mains, we were served a refreshing Cameron Berries Granita that was cold, crisp, and sharp in flavour to reset the taste buds in between the courses. This was shaved right in front of us by the chef himself from a little cart reminiscent of ais kepal vendors from the childhoods of Malaysian baby boomers.
As for the mains, we went with the Grilled Lamb Rack, nicely seared on the outside and tender within, topped generously with black pepper jus and served with pumpkin puree and an aubergine salad on the side. Upon looking into ATAS’ latest menu online, a Wagyu Beef Brisket is also on offer as a main and accompaniments to the beef include pomme puree, charred kailan, and anise jus. To conclude the meal on a sweet and memorable note, we were served the Dauphinoise Apple Tart with Chantilly mascarpone.
ATAS seems more forward in their approach all in all with this new culinary chapter, and we are certain that the restaurant’s evolved flavours and persona will be a hit amongst both diners visiting for the very first time and gourmands who are well-acquainted with ATAS.
The two-course and three-course set lunches at ATAS are priced at RM88 nett and RM105 nett respectively, whereas the set dinner is priced at RM328 nett per person, with supplementary items available at à la carte prices.
