In his highly anticipated follow-up, director Denis Villeneuve specifically requested a custom ‘Desert Watch’ and Hamilton created it in an exclusive partnership with Legendary Entertainment and Warner Bros. Pictures.
Hamilton also unveiled two special timepieces to commemorate the premiere of Dune: Part Two; unlike the Desert Watch, these Dune limited editions will be sold to the general public. Both are powered by quartz movements, have a futuristic, triangular housing that pays direct homage to the films.
Dune’s Prop Watches
Collaborating with Dune’s prop master, Doug Harlocker, the instructions from Villeneuve were that it should defy conventional watch rules and laws. The designers of Hamilton developed a timepiece that would later become the “Desert Watch” worn by the Fremen of Arrakis.
Ventura XXL Bright
The Ventura XXL Bright, the first of the two editions, combines three conventional hands with an analog timepiece and something unique beneath. The dial mimics the blazing blue lines of the “Desert Watch” dial design, which illuminates at the touch of a button (in the crown) and is evocative of Fremen’s distinctive blue eyes. This big, 52 x 46.6 mm steel watch has a matte black PVD coating. The Hamilton Ventura XXL Bright Dune, which is only available in 3,000 pieces, costs an estimated RM10,000 at retail.
Ventura Edge
Meanwhile, the Ventura Edge uses a digital display to replicate the appearance of the “Desert Watch” and all the relief components seen on the prop in the movie, making it even bolder in design and size at 51mm x 47.2mm. The steel angular case has a PVD coating and is fastened with a rubber band. The Ventura Edge is limited to 2,000 pieces and retails for estimated RM15,000.
