Portugal’s Cristiano Ronaldo has made history as the top goalscorer in the history of the European Championships after his tenth and 11th final goals for Portugal against Hungary in the ongoing UEFA EURO 2020. He also became the second men’s player to pass 100 international goals, behind only Ali Daei of Iran who scored 109 goals in his career.
Following the record, Ronaldo becomes the first player to be named ‘King of Goals’ in three of the big five European football championships.
On becoming the greatest goalscorer in the European championships final, he made a statement on Facebook: “I’ve already said that I don’t chase records, records chase me. For those who don’t understand what I mean by this, it’s very simple: football is a collective game, but it is through individual overcoming that we help our teams achieve their goals. It is always looking for more and more on the field, working more and more off the field, that records eventually emerge and collective titles become inevitable, some being the natural consequence of the other.”
Statistics from UEFA starkly noted that Ronaldo is more dangerous after half-time and most potent with his right leg. Additionally, he is noted to be oddly goal-shy between minutes 11-20 when playing for his home Portugal, but piles it on between minutes 76-full time.
