Being a PADI-certified diver in Malaysia is like holding the key to an oceanic kingdom that’s never too far away. With a plethora of islands and dive sites scattered across the country’s coastline, we’re spoiled for choice – from the world-famous waters of Sipadan to the vibrant marine wonders of Tioman. And one spot on this native’s local diving list is Tenggol Island, located off the East Coast of Peninsular Malaysia.
Many dive trips typically involve packed schedules that start with early mornings at sea before returning to shore for long recovery naps in the late afternoon. Thanks to our recent escape at Tanjong Jara Resort, however, we’ve discovered the joy of slowing down and reconnecting with nature – underwater, on land, and within ourselves. Besides, diving isn’t just about chasing adventures.
Here’s how our three-night coastal getaway at the resort reminded me that the best kind of dive trips touches both heart and habitat.
The Tenggol Divers Retreat package

As a certified PADI Dive Resort, Tanjong Jara Resort ensures every guest enjoys a flawless and exhilarating diving experience, offering expert-led courses and curated dive programmes such as the Tenggol Divers Retreat. This package includes accommodation for two persons in a traditional Malay-inspired Serambi Room, daily gourmet breakfasts and dinners, two dive excursions per day over two days, lunch on Tenggol Island for each dive day, and complimentary use of dive gear.
Seasoned local boatmen and a divemaster guide each excursion, ensuring divers and snorkelers can revel in the beauty of Tenggol’s underwater world with complete peace of mind. The journey begins with a 10-minute drive from the resort to the jetty, followed by a scenic 40-minute private boat ride to the first dive site of the day, determined based on the weather and conditions.

After surfacing, the group gathers under the shade of Tenggol Island’s palms for a thoughtfully prepared bento lunch. The flavours are distinctly local and varies each day – whether it’s turmeric-scented rice, grilled fish cooked with traditional spices, or a tangy acar salad – simple, nourishing, and grounding after the morning’s descent.
With appetites sated and gear prepped once more, the trip continues with a second dive. Typically, each dive site is carefully selected to offer a unique experience, taking into account the group’s interests and skill levels. By the subsequent ascent and boat ride back to Tanjong Jara, the day is still young – leaving ample time to reflect on the morning’s adventures and savour the serenity of the resort.
A gateway to Tenggol Island’s wonders

For the unacquainted, Tenggol Island is a renowned destination for deep-sea and drift diving. Nestled within the protected Terengganu Marine Park in the South China Sea, this unspoiled paradise boasts crystal-clear waters, thriving coral gardens, and diverse marine life. There are also legendary wreck sites for more advanced divers. And if you’re fortunate, the elusive whale shark may even make a rare appearance.
While the stars did not quite align for us to meet these gentle giants, our dives to sites like Tokong Burung, Rajawali Reef, and Amazing Grace were no less enjoyable. Our very first descent introduced us to the famous currents around this region, unexpectedly picking up as we made our way down to the bottom.
But once we began drifting along the reef, we were instantly captivated by a kaleidoscope of colour – vibrant corals swaying with the current, green humphead parrotfish gliding past, and shimmering schools of yellowtail fusiliers weaving through the water. We also saw moray eels, a green sea turtle, and a young eagle ray. Visibility throughout all four dives was great (roughly 15 metres), allowing us to immerse ourselves in the oceanic realm in all its glory.
A taste of the laid-back kampong lifestyle
As we’ve been acquainted with the resort’s serene Malay-inspired architecture and Sucimurni wellness programme before, we won’t delve much into those details. However, it’s worth noting that there’s enough to do around the resort for non-divers too. For those who enjoy staying active, the resort offers an adult swimming pool, gym, basketball court, tennis court, and games room fitted with a karaoke set.
Guests can also book a Jara Hill Walk led by the resort’s resident naturalist or pick up a traditional handicraft class. Alternatively, head to the Spa Village for a restorative massage or traditional Malay bath (perfect to soothe those post-dive aches). Every Saturday, the resort hosts a wholesome Kampong Sucimurni Lifestyle programme where guests can experience traditional games, complimentary shoulder massages, as well as local beverages and snacks.

In terms of dining, Di Atas Sungei offers a rotating breakfast buffet spread of local delicacies such as nasi lemak, ulam, and laksam. The restaurant gets its name from its location overlooking a gentle river that leads into the South China Sea, offering scenic, lush views from its balcony dining area. Also open for dinner, the ever-bubbly Menu Master, Chef Ann, will cook up a Malaysian feast tailored to your preferences using ingredients sourced from the local market.
As for lunch, take your pick from Nelayan, a beachfront restaurant offering Asian and Western selections; or Terratai Terrace, a poolside lounge serving healthy salads and desserts. For a truly unforgettable meal at the resort, plan your visit on a Saturday to savour the Taste of Terengganu buffet dinner, presenting a delicious variety of local delicacies amidst the verdant greens of Anjung Garden.

At Tanjong Jara Resort, guests don’t just escape to a secluded coastal paradise – they dive into adventure, reconnect with nature, immerse in local culture, and leave with memories that will last a lifetime.
Tanjong Jara Resort is open all year round, with the dive season starting from March to mid-October. The Tenggol Divers Retreat package is priced from RM 1,350 +++ per room for two persons.
