The name of the game was to craft a Tommy’s Margarita in the quickest time; which had close to 30 bartenders taking part to win cash prizes and merchandise. In the first round contestants had a run by themselves, with the opportunity to redo their initial attempt should they choose to – in case they’re unhappy with their time, or would just want to better their standings at being selected as the final eight who proceeded into the next round. Three judges were to score the first round based on taste, showmanship, and most importantly time. But also, the participants would be disqualified if they served an underpoured glass.
Round two had the bartenders going up against each other, and from there, the final three winners were eventually decided upon. And so, for the inaugural Código 1530 KL Margarita Speed Challenge, Janice Lok from No Bar Here, in Penang was eventually crowned the winner. Meanwhile, Malaysian bartender Vik, who is based in Singapore, travelled all the way up to participate and was the first runner-up, and Boon Leong from Four Points Chinatown’s Jann came in third.
Talking tequila
Tequila has long been a symbol of Mexico’s rich cultural heritage, and Código 1530 captures that essence with elegance and tradition. Tequila, a distilled spirit made from the blue weber agave, originated in Jalisco, Mexico, and has evolved into a refined global favourite. Its roots stretch back to the Aztecs, but the modern version began in the 16th century when Spanish settlers introduced distillation techniques. Over time, tequila has become one of the world’s most beloved spirits.
Código 1530, once a private recipe enjoyed by select families in Los Bajos, Mexico, exemplifies ultra-premium tequila. Known as “El Tequila Privado,” it was closely guarded until it became available to the public. Made from 100% pure blue weber agave, Código 1530 is produced using the finest ingredients and upholds centuries-old customs, known as “Los Códigos,” to guide every step of the process.
Its use of Napa Valley Cabernet French White Oak barrels is unique to the brand to age its tequilas, imparting distinctive flavours. The Blanco, the purest expression, is unrested, showcasing agave’s earthy, mineral essence with a citrus sweetness. The Rosa, rested for a month in uncharred Cabernet barrels, adds a subtle pink hue and floral finish. The Reposado, aged six months, offers a complex blend of vanilla, caramel, and cocoa. The Añejo, aged 18 months, delivers refined notes of fruit, vanilla, and spice. Finally, the Origen Extra Añejo, aged six years, presents rich flavours of dried fig, cinnamon, sweet oak, and vanilla.
Each expression of Código 1530 is crafted with meticulous care, free of additives, and aged to perfection, embodying the finest of tequila traditions. With its legacy of quality and refinement, Código 1530 stands as more than just a spirit; it is a celebration of Mexico’s rich heritage, crafted for those who appreciate luxury and tradition in every sip.
