Superhero media continue to dominate conversations around the world, whether it’s Marvel or DC Comics or other publications, most audiences want to know what’s coming next, and does it involve superheroes? Some may argue that the genre is becoming stale and repetitive, and while this may be true for some of the content released each year, other superhero franchises continue to keep us on the edge of our seats. Looking at you The Boys and Invincible.
When it comes to summer releases, you can anticipate your local theatre or streaming service to be flooded with new movies/shows geared to keep people occupied over the summer. That being said, we compile the most anticipated superhero movies and shows that are releasing throughout the summer that will keep you entertained from June until September.
The Boys: Season 3
The Boys returns after a two-year hiatus with an action-packed new season. This season follows the Boys and their discovery of a mysterious new Anti-Supe weapon, which causes them to run into the first superhero: Soldier Boy. Joining the cast for season 3 is Laurie Holden as The Crimson Countess, Nick Wechsler as Blue Hawk and Jensen Ackles as Soldier Boy. According to EW, season 3 of The Boys is expected to be even more outlandish, as it adapts Herogasm, one of the most risque storylines from the comics. Season 3 premieres on June 3rd on Amazon Prime.
Ms Marvel
Ms Marvel, Marvel’s first Muslim Pakistani hero, debuts in a new coming-of-age series. Kamala is a superhero lover with a vivid imagination, especially when it comes to Captain Marvel. She feels out of place at school and sometimes even at home until she gains superpowers similar to the heroes she admires. Newcomer Iman Vellani stars as the titular hero, Kamala Khan/Ms Marvel. Critics have already seen a few episodes, and the consensus is that it’s charming, humorous, and a lot of fun. The series will air on Disney Plus on June 8th.
The Umbrella Academy: Season 3
The quirkiest family on television returns, albeit in a reality other than their own, to deal with an unidentified destructive entity that they may have been the cause of. Stuck in an alternate reality they must now persuade Dad’s new and maybe better family to assist them in repairing the damage that their arrival has caused. The third season of The Umbrella Academy will launch on Netflix on June 22.
Baymax
Baymax, the giant, adorable robot from Big Hero 6, stars in his own spinoff series, from Disney+. Outside of his superhero squad, Baymax works as a nurse in San Fransokyo, and the series follows his daily escapades. Hiro Hamada also returns, but this time in a supporting role. The series premieres on Disney+ on June 29, 2022.
Thor: Love and Thunder
Thor, the strongest Avenger returns for his fourth solo outing, this time facing his greatest foe yet; an existential crisis. Thor sets out on a search for inner peace unlike anything he’s ever done, but Gorr the God Butcher (as you can tell by the name, he kills gods), sets his plans asunder. Valkyrie and Korg return to aid Thor in his intergalactic mission to stop Gorr, along with his ex-girlfriend Jane (now with superpowers), who might just make things a little more complicated. Thor: Love and Thunder is set for theatrical release, premiering on July 8, 2022.
Green Lantern: Beware my Power
Since the critical and commercial failure of Green Lantern (2011), the hero has been constantly swept under the rug in favour of more popular heroes like Batman and Superman. Green Lantern: Beware My Power is the hero’s first animated film since Green Lantern: Emerald Knights, which was released in 2011. The animated film follows John Stewart, a recently retired Marine sniper who is at a crossroads in his life, which is further made more problematic by the fact that he receives an extraterrestrial ring that provides him with the powers of the Green Lantern of Earth. Green Arrow, Adam Strange, and Hawkgirl are among the DC heroes who are in the film. The film is scheduled to be released on June 26, 2022.
DC League of Super-Pets
The new DC Comics and Warner Bros. film reunite the hilarious duo Dwayne Johnson and Kevin Hart in a family-friendly comedy that is sure to entertain people of all ages. DC League of Super-Pets follows Krypto the Super-Dog who assembles a ragtag team of furry heroes to use their newly acquired abilities to save the Justice League. The animated film features a stunning voice cast, with Dwayne Johnson as Krypto the Super-Dog, Kevin Hart as Ace the Bat-Hound, John Krasinski as Superman and Keanu Reeves as Batman. The animated film is set for theatrical release on July 27, 2022.
She-Hulk: Attorney at Law
Jennifer Walters is a 30-year-old single attorney who is also a green 6-foot-7-inch superpowered hulk. She-Hulk: Attorney at Law follows her as she navigates her personal life as well as training with her cousin, Bruce Banner/Hulk, to keep her newfound powers in check. Mark Ruffalo as Smart Hulk, Tim Roth as Emil Blonsky/the Abomination, and Benedict Wong as Wong, among others from the Marvel Cinematic Universe, star in the nine-episode series. She-Hulk: Attorney at Law premieres on Disney+ on August 17.
