Wearable tech is moving to the next level. Samsung has just announced the launch of its Galaxy Ring – a ring that connects to your phone, just like a smartwatch would. Samsung’s first truly new wearable device (in what seems like forever) reveals how the company intends to transform its health and fitness wearables in the years to come. Though this isn’t the first time a company has attempted to revolutionise the wearables industry via a ring or bracelet, a smart ring from Samsung could be the key to finally making these devices popular.
As compared to a smartwatch, the Galaxy Ring is sleeker, super light and seems to be more comfortable to wear. Smartwatches are cumbersome and may not always be practical to wear during more formal occasions, work-out sessions, or sleep-ins.
The insides of the ring contain a couple of crucial sensors for possibly tracking common health metrics like heart rate, stress, blood oxygen saturation, calories and more. It’s a perfect device for those who love to track steps and sleep cycles without the buzzing notifications and extra screen that comes with wearing a smartwatch. However, the most important parameter would be sleep tracking. The Galaxy Ring could play a key role in keeping a tab on sleep apnea, which is another common sleep disorder. The device will also be capable of tracking the menstrual cycle.
As with most Samsung wearable products, the Galaxy Ring is designed to be worn together with the Galaxy Watch to track the metrics more accurately and to provide a better user experience. Meanwhile, the Samsung Health app coming in the second half of this year could be the second companion application for accessing all the health data and creating detailed reports with graphs and numbers.
Designed in three colours – gold, silver and black, the smart ring has a concave shape to avoid surface scratches and is available in small to large sizes. There’s no confirmed release date yet, however, the Samsung Galaxy Ring will most likely be launched later this year.
Now, the question is: Will you replace the bulky smartwatch you have on with this sleek, minimal smart ring?
