If RiRi can wear it in the middle of spring, that gives us Malaysians an excuse to get in on the trend too.
Beanies are so last year, balaclavas are the way to keep warm this fall/winter. But why wait until winter when you can wear them now, as Rihanna’s latest IG posts suggest? And if RiRi can wear it in the middle of spring, that gives us Malaysians an excuse to get in on the trend too.
Wait, what is a balaclava, you ask?
Not to be confused with baklava – a sweet, flaky dessert pastry of Ottoman origins, the balaclava is a type of cloth headgear typically worn for skiing in winter. It is designed like a mask to protect the face from cold, exposing only parts of it such as the eyes, nose, and mouth. In other contexts, you may know it as a tool to conceal one’s identity, used by SWAT teams, military troops and criminals alike.
Now, we suppose you can wear it as a fashion accessory too. Designer fashion houses such as Calvin Klein, Gucci and Richard Malone have proven so in their Fall 2018 collections.
Since RiRi has already taken the accessory from the runways to the streets of Coachella, it’s only a matter of time before we see other style icons do the same. The question is: would you dare follow suit?
