Automobili Lamborghini pays tribute to some of its iconic racecars with the unveiling of its new road-homologated super sports car: the Lamborghini Huracán STO – Super Trofeo Omologata.
According to Lamborghini’s Chairman and CEO, Stefano Domenicali, the Huracán STO is “the purest incarnation of Lamborghini Squadra Corse heritage,” drawing inspiration from the Huracán GT3 EVO and Huracán Super Trofeo EVO. It takes the exhilaration, aerodynamics and build of a superior sports car and makes it legal for the road.
A new design
What makes this sportscar such a standout is its entirely new exterior design, which reflects the technology transfer from previous successful Huracán race cars. It highlights the use of lightweight technologies and aerodynamic efficiency that’s highly demanded in motorsports, made possible by the collaboration between Lamborghini’s R&D, Squadra Corse and Centro Stile departments.
Inspired by the Lamborghini Miura and Sesto Elemento, the automaker’s team of engineers created the ‘cofango’, which combines the ‘cofano’ (hood), ‘parafango’ (fender), and the front bumper. New air ducts have been placed on the front bonnet to increase airflow through the central radiator, while the cofango also incorporates a new front splitter to direct airflow to the newly designed underbody of the car and to the rear diffuser.
To reduce drag while increasing rear downforce and the car’s overall aerodynamic efficiency, a new fender derived from the Super Trofeo EVO is implemented. A NACA air intake into the STO’s rear fender serves as an engine air intake, with the shortened duct allowing a 30% decrease in static pressure losses.
Air-cooling has also been improved at the rear underhood, thanks to a revised rear hood design which features an integrated air scoop. It also sports a built-in shark fin on the rear bonnet that improves the dynamic abilities of the STO Huracán, especially when cornering. A single-slotted wing with double airfoil optimises aerodynamic balance and drag resistance according to track characteristics.
The engine
The Huracán STO runs on a V10 naturally aspirated 640 hp power plant which produces 545 Nm at 6,500 rpm. The rear-wheel drive is able to achieve the century sprint in a mere 3.0 seconds, 0-200 km/h in 9.0 seconds, and a top speed of 310 km/h. It also features an increased wheel track, stiffer suspension bushing, specific anti-foll bars and Lamborghini’s MagneRide 2.0, which delivers all the emotion of a racecar without compromising a comfortable, seamless road experience.
The drive
Three new driving modes have been equipped onto the Huracán STO, which focuses on high performance driving environments: STO, Trofeo, and Pioggia. The default STO mode is made for road driving and curving roads; the Trofeo mode is optimised for dry asphalt and track use; and the Pioggia (rain) mode optimises traction control, torque vectoring, rear-wheel steering and the ABS on wet asphalt.
The interior
A peek inside the Huracán STO offers a reflection of the lightweight persona of the exterior. It uses an extensive use of carbon fibre features throughout the cockpit, including sports seats in full carbon fibre; an Alcatara interior with Lamborghini’s Carbonskin; carpets removed and replaced by floor mats in carbon fibre; and the fully carbon fibre lightweight door panels with a door latch as opener.
The Huracán’s touchscreen features New Human Machine Interface (HMI) graphics, which manages the car’s functions including drive mode indicator, the LDVI system, tyre pressures and brake temperature. It also includes a fully connected telemetry system that allows pilots to monitor and record their performance and to analyse the data via the Lamborghini UNICA app.
Owners of the Huracán STO can also fully personalise the exterior and interior of their road-racecar via the Ad Personam personalisation program, which offers limitless paint and trim combinations as well as race-style vinyls.
The Lamborghini Huracán STO will be hitting the roads in Spring 2021, with a retail price of US$327,838 (approximately RM 1,340,464).
