Since launching the Fifty Fathoms in 1953, Blancpain has been a leader in the realm of diver’s watches for the modern era, inspiring countless future watches of the genre. The Bathyscaphe line, long known for its reliability and versatility, has been a central part of Blancpain’s diver’s watch collection for more than half a century.
As the latest addition to the line, the new Fifty Fathoms Bathyscaphe features a titanium case, a first in this current line descended from the first Fifty Fathoms. Blancpain is, however, not new to the use of titanium, incorporating the metal as early as the 1960s into MILSPEC II models for US Navy bomb disposal teams.
High strength for high tides
Bringing numerous enhancements to the diver’s watch, titanium is favoured for its high resistance to shock, pressure and corrosion. The metal’s low density also provides a light and more comfortable wear.
Made of satin-finished grade 23 titanium, the sharply contoured case measures 43mm in diameter and has a water-resistance of 30 bar/300 metres. Its dial sports an anthracite colour with a handcrafted, vertical satin finish that provides a contemporary matte aesthetic.
The luminescent baton hands and geometric hour markers classic to the Bathyscaphe line feature in this new model, along with a satin-finished titanium bezel with a satin-finished ceramic insert and a Liquidmetal™ time scale.
Equipped with the in-house Calibre 1315, technical excellence and precision are key in this new Bathyscaphe. The self-winding movement boasts a five-day power reserve and a silicon balance-spring that desensitises it from magnetic fields.
Visible through the transparent sapphire caseback, the high level finishing is seen in the snailed and chamfered bridges which work in tandem with the sandblasted, satin-finished, gold oscillating weight.
Customers can choose a NATO or anthracite sailcloth strap for their new Bathyscaphe, or opt for a grade 23 satin-finished titanium bracelet that is identical to those fitted on the Fifty Fathoms models.
