In an enchanting realm where mixology and visual arts meet, the collaboration of Shirmy Chan and Yeoh Choo Kuan is an emphasis on the integration of these two creative worlds. Their serendipitous meeting in 2018 not only forged a deep friendship but also paved the way for a ground-breaking collaboration that transcends the traditional boundaries of both fields.
Mixology, an art form in its own right, extends beyond the mere blending of flavours and ingredients, and Shirmy excels at it through engaging with people from diverse cultures. It is an intricate dance of presentation, where mixologists, like Shirmy, meticulously craft visually-appealing cocktails comprising flavourful ingredients to attain specific taste profiles. With a marked focus on aesthetics, a synergy between mixology and visual art is born naturally.
Visual artist Choo Kuan credits his inspiration to numerous artistic domains worldwide, constantly stretching himself beyond his comfort zone. This special connection between a visual artist and a mixologist then evolves into something much more: an experience that is both unique and cohesive, merging the visual aspects of both disciplines whilst drawing parallels to the process of cognac production.
During a fortuitous night at Shirmy’s bar, Terumi, last year, the duo found themselves savouring the exquisite Martell Noblige. The tales of their individual journeys soon flowed, with Shirmy celebrating Terumi’s success and Choo Kuan sharing the lushness of his newly published art monograph.
Amidst the clinking of glasses and the aura of creativity emitted from Martell Noblige, the joint inspiration sparked an explosion of ideas. The artist’s work inspired the mixologist to experiment with new flavours and techniques while the mixologist’s creations provided novel avenues for the artist’s future masterpieces. Their collaboration embodies their passions – a celebration of collective craftsmanship and the desire to soar beyond expectations – and culminates in the forthcoming grand display at Bar Terumi, the Exclusive Martell Experience.
This enthralling collaboration made possible by Martell Noblige, offers a fusion of two distinct art forms. The partnership of two masters showcases the bond between art and mixology at its very finest: both fields challenge traditional notions and captivate audiences through innovative approaches.
As part of the momentous event, Choo Kuan pictured a masterpiece inspired by the Martell world – titled Smokescreen, the acrylic on linen piece symbolises the concealment of reality. Using a blend of multiple shades, the artist effectively creates layers in his piece, luring viewers to explore beyond what meets the eye. With the artwork as her creative influence, Shirmy concocted a cocktail of the same name – mixing the smoky depth of Martell Noblige with the subtle sweetness of the poached pear, the cocktail guarantees a memorable affair.
The impressive influence of the Martell world paved the path for three other cocktails crafted by Shirmy. ReUndo is a call for refreshing elements where cucumber and milk meet Martell’s refined texture. A blend of the tropical wax apple and tangy calamansi juice resulted in a Sour Dilemma – a cocktail of contrasting flavours, it holds a taste that is intriguing yet mellow. The Sun Would Hide from Me #2 signifies a thrilling comparison between warmth and intensity where the exquisite Martell Noblige is combined with ginger and raspberry in ideal amounts.
Whether it be through incorporating mixology into the artist’s work or creating unique cocktails that draw inspiration from the artist’s creations, this dynamic duo gleams brightly, allowing viewers to indulge in a magical journey that rivets the senses.
For a single day only on 29th January 2024 at Bar Terumi, the Exclusive Martell Experience will make its debut amidst the company of Choo Kuan and Shirmy. The works of art and cocktails created during this unique partnership will be available until 30th April 2024.
