High-end independent watchmakers Hautlence (a sister brand of H.Moser & Cie) are known for their insanely cool and innovative timepieces. That’s why we were particularly excited to check out what Hautlence has in store ahead of this year’s Watches and Wonders during a media preview in Kuala Lumpur recently.
Known for their rectangular TV-shaped dials, they have decided to emphasise this design trait for The Hautlence Linear Series 2, their latest creation. Only this time, the timepiece is crafted with an entirely blackened steel case. According to the watchmakers, black never goes out of style.
It certainly is a stylish piece, dressy enough for the boardroom and casual enough to be worn just about anywhere. The redesigned case features a stunning black PVD coating offering a striking contrast with the blued-linkage movements. The Linear Series 2 also comes with a new calibre powered by the in-house designed, produced and developed calibre D50 self-winding movement.
The unique time reading display is something Hautlence is admirable for. Drawing on last year’s Linear Series 1’s jumping hour disc and the half-trailing hour chain, the Linear Series 2 comes with a unique linear retrograde jumping hour and features an aesthetically pleasing three-dimensional open execution with a flying tourbillon.
It may seem like a complex dial at first glance, but it’s quite straightforward to decipher even in darker conditions. By combining the luminous Super-Luminova paint and Globolight, a kind of luminescent ceramic to the numerals, the illuminated feature gives this piece a thoughtful and clever approach to telling the time.
On the left of the timepiece is a graduated scale resembling those often used on measuring instruments to indicate the hours with a small white pointer showing the hour reading on a vertical scale. A notched bezel, also covered in PVD, comes with a black rubber band to compliment the durable and lightweight strap.
The Hautlence Linear Series 2 is limited to 28 pieces and will be presented at the upcoming Watches & Wonders 2023.
