OMEGA combines animation with the art of watchmaking in the new Speedmaster “Silver Snoopy Award” 50th Anniversary.
It was the year 1970 when OMEGA received the coveted “Silver Snoopy Award” from the astronauts at NASA, in recognition of the watchmaker’s unique contributions to space exploration, as well as the vital support from the brand’s iconic Speedmaster during the rescue of Apollo 13.
50 years later, OMEGA has created a special timepiece in honour of this occasion. It combines animation with the art of watchmaking, paying tribute to the adorable Snoopy in Speedmaster edition.
The timepiece features the cartoon beagle first as an embossed silver medallion on the blue subdial at 9 o’clock. He sports his famous spacesuit, in the exact style of the silver pin that NASA astronauts give to award recipients. The dial itself is also silver and laser-engraved with Ag925, including two more blue subdials and blue PVD angle-shaped hour markers and hands.
Snoopy makes a fun trip into orbit when you flip to the caseback of the OMEGA Speedmaster Silver Snoopy Award, as he sits in his animated black and white Command and Service Module (CSM) on a magical hand. When the chronograph seconds hand is in use, Snoopy takes a trip around the mysterious far side of the moon – just like the Apollo 13 crew – with the lunar surface being decorated on the sapphire crystal using a unique micro-structured metallisation.
A vision of our planet Earth can be seen in the distance on the caseback. Our humble planet rotates once per minute, in sync with the watch’s small seconds hand, and symbolises the precise rotation of the Earth. The quote “Eyes on the Stars” is written across the black universe. The NAIAD LOCK keeps the caseback engravings in the correct, upright position, including the date in 1970 that OMEGA received the Silver Snoopy Award, as well as a tribute to the imperilled Apollo 13 mission that same year.
In order to showcase OMEGA’s attention to detail, the Speedmaster Silver Snoopy Award sports a blue nylon fabric strap that matches the other blue elements of the watch. The strap also features the trajectory of the Apollo 13 mission, which is embossed on the lining. The strap is attached to a 42mm case in stainless steel, which is inspired by the 4th generation Speedmaster style. The tachymeter scale, with the iconic “Dot over Ninety”, is shown in white enamel on a blue ceramic bezel ring.
Driving the Speedmaster “Silver Snoopy Award” is the OMEGA Co-Axial Master Chronometer Calibre 3861 – the most recent update of the legendary Moonwatch movement. This groundbreaking movement features anti-magnetic innovation, 50-hours power reserve, and Master Chronometer certification from the Swiss Federal Institute of Metrology (METAS).
Lovers of both OMEGA watches and Snoopy can thank their lucky stars, as this fun and unique timepiece will not be a limited production. It comes with OMEGA’s full 5-year warranty, and buyers will receive the watch in its own Apollo 13 presentation box, complete with a microfibre cleaning cloth, a brochure, and a magnifying glass.
