Not all cocktails are created equal. Even the most experienced bartenders and mixologists might not know of the truly bizarre creations that lie out there in the world. Even though some of these drinks have peculiar names, including Captain’s Blood and The Crapper, they are nonetheless highly sought after. This list focuses on uncommon and odd drinks with unusual ingredients that cocktail connoisseurs simply must try.
Captain’s Blood
Captain’s Blood is a daiquiri-inspired cocktail made with Velvet Falernum, a low-proof Barbadian liqueur made with almonds, lime, spices, and sugar and is regarded as a key component in many premium tiki beverages. It is believed that this beverage was created during the 1920s and 1940s.
Diamonds are Forever
Diamonds Are Forever is a pricey cocktail that is often replicated in different forms at upscale establishments all over the world. At over $1,000, it was considered to be one of the most expensive drinks in the world. The original recipe includes expensive L’Heraud Grand Champagne Cognac, specially formulated The Bitter Truth Jerry Thomas Bitters, and Luxor 24k Gold Flake Champagne.
Sweet & Sour Chicken Toddy
To recreate the sweet, sour, and spicy flavours of the Hot Toddy’s namesake Asian chicken dish, lime and Sriracha are cooked with chicken broth. The herbs in the chicken broth (parsley, thyme, bay leaves, and peppercorns), which are a welcome counterpoint to the fruity, spicy, and salty notes of the other components, are highlighted by a splash of botanical gin.
Gunpowder Plot
This drink is inspired by the 1605 Gunpowder Plot, an unsuccessful attempt to murder King James I and was created by Grant Collins, a bartender from Sydney, Australia. Collins employed bitters, gunpowder syrup, and infused spirits to create a fiery, smoky flavour.
Coquetier
The coquetier was invented in New Orleans in the 18th century by Antoine Amédée Peychaud. He served his mixture in eggcups after combining brandy and bitters. Rum, chocolate, cinnamon, and the chicken egg in which the cocktail is served are the main components.
Black Ink Martini
A sprig of fresh oregano is used as a garnish for the interesting Black ink Martini, which also contains squid ink, grape brandy, sweet vermouth, lime, and agave. Surprisingly, the salt in the ink seems to help the vermouth and sweet grape brandy blend perfectly.
The Crapper
Despite having an unappetizing title, this cocktail is considered to be quite tasty. The Crapper consists of rum, coconut, and chocolate flavouring, and was invented at the Rock and Rita’s bar in Las Vegas. Even a Snickers bar is added as a garnish.
Bubble Bath Martini
You might want to try this beverage if, for some reason, you’ve been yearning a chilled cup of bubble bath. Lychee, poppy seed, and lavender-flavoured liquor make up the martini. Rose air is poured into the drink to generate the frothy bubbles on top. A rubber ducky is obviously necessary for a bubble bath. For those who are daring drinkers, Lounge Bohemia’s Bubble Bath Martini is a delicious treat.
