Nope, shaving your beard does not make it thicker.
A man with a beard is a man of masculinity and confidence and let’s face it, masculinity is the second sexiest thing in a man – after facial hair that is. We’re not just talking about no-shave November here. There is something about the lumbersexual look and as much as personality (and intelligence, might we add) plays the cards in being the make or break during courtship, we’re guilty of falling for your beards first, guys.
Thinking of growing your own but are unsure? Don’t let these 7 myths stop you.
Myth: Beards are filled with bacteria
Anything that is not cleaned regularly is filled with bacteria, that much goes without saying. A dirty beard is more a reflection of your personal hygiene. Cleaning your beard with a beard wash helps keep it free from germs.
Myth: A full beard takes two to three weeks to grow
This really depends on daddy’s genes. If you’re really lucky (or just really hairy), a full-grown beard can take only a couple of weeks, but most take up to a couple of months. Don’t be disheartened if it’s not growing as fast, or as thick, as you like.
Myth: Beards makes you less attractive
There is a certain percentage of women who prefer their man clean shaven and then there are some who like a full on beard. There are also fans of the midway, stubble and moustache. Like beauty, the attractiveness of a beard is in the eye of the beholder. This brings us to the next point.
Myth: Go full or go home
We understand that not everyone can grow a full face of hair, and that’s okay. Work with what you have – there are many styles that allow you to work with what you were born with and each of them carries its own appeal. Just make sure it’s well-groomed and it suits you.
Myth: Beards are pesky and itchy
One of the main reasons men give up on growing out their beards is because they claim it itches. Itching is fairly uncommon if you moisturise frequently and take good care of your follicles to prevent ingrown hair.
Myth: Shaving your beard makes it thicker
No, shaving does not make your beard grow thicker. On behalf of the universe, we’re sorry you gave away all your money to your nearest drug store for all those shaving blades. Neither does the old wives tales of applying coconut oil, castor oil or any other weird oils you’ve heard of.
Myth: You can’t get a job if you have a beard
So long as your beard is well-groomed and properly kempt, there really isn’t an issue for any employers to hold your beard against you.
