You’ve heard them on the news, you’ve seen them on social media. There’s no escaping any talk of NFTs these days, not with the art, fashion, music, basically the entire world getting in on it.
There are more down-to-earth versions of them like CryptoKitties, the Ethereum blockchain game where you can buy, sell and breed digital “cats” and then there are the high rollers at Christie’s who recently sold an artwork called Beeple for US$69 million.
In between, anything can be an NFT, from a music score to digitised doodle. If you’re a creator and would like to put something on sale, or you’re looking to collect some of your own, these are the top seven NFT marketplaces to buy and sell right now.
Note: You will need a digital wallet and use cryptocurrencies to pay for your purchases.
OpenSea
Boldly claiming to be the largest NFT marketplace, OpenSea offers almost everything from art and domain names to virtual worlds, trading cards and collectibles, including ERC721 and ERC1155 assets. They have over 700 different projects and name systems, like ENS (Ethereum Name Service). Using OpenSea’s item minting tool, you can create your own item on the blockchain for free without a single line of code. When selling, you can opt for fixed price, create a declining price listing or opt for an auction listing. W opensea.io
Rarible
Rarible is a proudly community-owned NFT marketplace where its “owners’ hold the ERC-20 RARI Token. Rarible encourages loyalty by awarding RARI tokens to active users on the platform, distributing up to 75,000 RARI every week. Compared to most other platforms, it focuses more on art assets, although it does also buy and sell NFT on photography, games, metaverses, music, domains, memes and more. Creators on Rarible can mint new NFTs to sell and can even grant full access only to purchasers while limiting visitors to only sneak peeks for exclusivity. W rarible.com
SuperRare
SuperRare is the place to go for those looking for unique, single-edition digital artworks. Each of them is created by an artist in the network and tokenized as a crypto-collectible that is ownable and tradeable. SuperRare has also built a social network on top of its marketplace, where transactions are made using ether. Only a small number of hand-picked artists are on SuperRare for now, but should you be interested, you may submit your profile for consideration. W superrare.com
Foundation
Designed to bring digital creators, crypto natives and collectors together, Foundation calls itself the new creative economy with a primary focus on digital art. In true community art style, it launched with a blog post calling for creators to experiment with crypto and play with the concept of value and to “hack, subvert and manipulate the value of creative work”. Foundation protects its artists by giving them 10% on every secondary transaction, meaning said artist receives 10% of the sales value any time a work is resold to someone else for a higher price. AtomicMarket
As a marketplace, AtomicMarket is one of the most used because it is a shared liquidity NFT market, which means everything listed on it also shows on all other markets. It trades Atomic Assets, a standard for NFTs on the eosio blockchain technology. It allows anyone to utilize it to tokenise and create digital assets to buy, sell and auction as well browse existing listings. Well-known collections get a verification checkmark for straight-forward authenticity checks while malicious collections are blacklisted to protect users. W wax.atomicmarket.io
Portion
Calling itself the 21st Century auction house, Portion functions as an online marketplace complete with an Artist Community, a global network of decentralised artists and creators. It connects them through Blockchain technology to sell, invest and own art and collectibles with complete transparency. With portion, anyone can be a collector because you can manage your physical and digital collections all in one place. Portion Tokens are ERC-20 assets on the Ethereum blockchain and are used to decentrally govern and vote on the platform’s future. New tokens are released for liquidity mining artist grants, partnerships and future team members, as well as distribution when artists create new NFTs. New NFTs are currently worth 500 PRT each. Async Art
Async Art differs slightly from the rest as an art movement built on the blockchain where you can create, collect and trade programmable art. There are “masters” and “layers” you can buy, with “masters” being 1/1 edition and “layers” being the individual components that make up the master image. Artists continue to decide what happens to the layers and every change made to the layer changes the master as well, regardless of who owns it. This grants the artist freedom to grant control to individual collectors, who might want to change the background, the character or the colour of the sky. The results are dynamic, interactive NFTs, as well as digital art that changes overtime. W async.art
