The world’s first makeup museum is opening in New York City next year

It is set to open with an immersive exhibition titled Pink Jungle: 1950s Makeup in America, which will explore the entrepreneurs, icons and trends that defined the decade.

While we’re always enthusiastic about new beauty launches as much as the next makeup junkie, we’ve got debatably more exciting news for the beauty community next year. The world’s first makeup museum has announced that it is officially opening its doors in New York City next May!

Located at 94 Gansevoort St. in the meatpacking district of the bustling metropolitan, the Makeup Museum will highlight the history of beauty and its ongoing impact on society. Committed to empowering visitors to learn more about beauty whilst having fun with it, the institution will hold large-scale exhibitions in addition to featuring ‘interactive and shoppable programming’.

It is set to open with an immersive exhibition titled Pink Jungle: 1950s Makeup in America, which will explore the entrepreneurs, icons and trends that defined the decade.

“The Makeup Museum is a critical institution for the cultural landscape in New York and globally. Makeup has a 10,000-year history, spanning from the ancient Egyptians and the kohl eye liner they used to kabuki and geisha makeup in Japan, all the way to drag makeup and the influence it has today on pop culture,” said Executive Director and co-founder Doreen Bloch.

She adds that the museum is kicking off with the ‘50s because it’s attributed to the birth of the modern makeup industry with the rise of pioneering brands such as Elizabeth Arden, Max Factor and Sally Hansen, as well as timeless trends like the cat eye and bold red lip.

Visitors can expect to discover beauty products used by prominent divas like Marilyn Monroe, Greta Garbo and Audrey Hepburn, alongside an array of vintage artefacts and informative installations.

Tickets for the exhibition go on sale in March 2020, but you can also sign up for the early access waitlist on the website now. Guess it’s time to book a trip to New York!
