Volvo Car Malaysia (VCM) ended 2022 on a high recently by launching its latest addition in the form of the all-electric Volvo C40 Recharge. Proudly made in Malaysia at the firm’s Shah Alam-based assembly plant, the coupe-styled crossover SUV sees Volvo ramping up its efforts towards becoming Malaysia’s leading e-luxury carmaker.
Like its XC40 Recharge twin, the C40 Recharge builds upon Volvo’s latest CMA platform, with the Malaysian-flavoured C40 Recharge offered in a ‘Twin’ trimline that features both a dual-motor and all-wheel-drive (AWD) setup. The former is juiced by a 78 kWh lithium-ion battery pack, thus allowing it to boast segment-leading performance figures of 402 HP and 660 NM.
This also sees this Swede Sensation of sorts boasting segment-leading performance and range abilities – 0-100 KM/H in just 4.7 seconds plus up to 438 KM of travel on a single full charge. Speaking of the latter, the C40 Recharge shares similar charging abilities as the XC40 Recharge, welcoming both regular AC and DC rapid charging, the latter granting 10% to 80% charges in just 28 minutes at a rate of 150 kW.
What sets the C40 apart from its XC40 twin is of course the styling it encompasses. Key to this is the coupe-like lower roofline with a steep rear rake a la ‘fastback’. The rear end also gets striking touches such as two rear spoilers plus a distinct pair of LED taillights.
Up front, the C40 Recharge boasts Volvo’s signature ‘Thor’s Hammer’ LED headlights design to flank its faux front grille where the marque’s ‘Iron Mask’ badge – yet another current-gen Volvo design trait – proudly sits front and centre. Finishing things off here is the striking two-tone paint it wears, plus the snazzy 19-inch alloy wheels it rides on.
Before you ask, VCM will offer the C40 Recharge with a choice of five colours. It includes Black Stone, Silver Dawn, Crystal White, Sage Green, as well as its latest signature Fjord Blue hue.
On board, the C40 Recharge retains the sleek, minimalistic design seen in the XC40 Recharge. It also shares similar key tech, namely things like an Android-powered 9-inch infotainment portrait display, as well as a 12-inch digital instrument cluster display. With an emphasis on sustainability, the C40 Recharge’s seat upholstery, steering wheel and gear knob are made of plush leather-free materials too.
Additional features worth highlighting include a 13-speaker Harman Kardon premium audio suite, wireless charging pad, backlit trim décor, not forgetting a panoramic sunroof.
Style and luxury aside, the Volvo C40 Recharge also upholds the marque’s high standards for safety as it gets a bevy of advanced driver assistance (ADAS), both active and passive. Included here is Volvo’s proprietary City Safety suite consisting of collision avoidance and mitigation functions capable of detecting pedestrians, cyclists, and even large animals.
Standard ADAS features include Automated Emergency Braking (AEB), Front and Rear Collision Warning and Mitigation, Lane Keep Assist (LKAS), Run-off Road Mitigation with Road Edge Detection, Cross-Traffic Alert (CTA), Blind Spot Monitor (BSM) with Steer Assist, amongst many others.
