The non-profit stated that the more demanding requirements had been applied to both the Top Safety Pick and the higher-tier Top Safety Pick Plus award categories. The purpose of the adjustments to the 2024 award criteria was to encourage automakers to pursue better levels of safety.
Numerous 2024 models, ranging in size from compact cars and SUVs to big trucks and minivans, were among the 71 vehicles acknowledged in a ranking based on safety features.
2024 Genesis GV70
The Genesis, Hyundai, and Kia brands are part of the Hyundai Motor Group, which holds the record for the most 2024 awards with a total of 16 Top Safety Pick and 10 Top Safety Pick accolades.
A Top Safety Pick+ from the IIHS, the 2024 Genesis GV70 crossover received the highest grade of Good in all crash tests.
2024 Kia EV6
The EV6 boasts superior in-car technologies and is sportier. Kia raised the stakes in 2023 with the insanely entertaining EV6 GT.
Using a different scoring system than its other ratings, its front crash prevention technology received the highest rating of Superior from the group. The 2023 EV6 received the highest rating of Good in all six crash tests.
2023 Volvo V90
Although true wagons are becoming increasingly rare, the Volvo V90 delivers the performance, comfort, and style that fans of the style have grown to hope for. A 2.0-liter mild-hybrid four-cylinder turbocharged and supercharged engine producing 295 horsepower powers the V90.
Leather upholstery, power-adjustable front seats, and wireless device charging are standard features of the V90. It also has a touch-screen infotainment system with a learning curve and all-wheel drive. An IIHS Top Safety Pick+ is awarded to the V90.
Other Winners
Toyota Motor Corp., parent company of the Lexus and Toyota brands, came in second with one Top Safety Pick+ and twelve Top Safety Pick honors. With five Top Safety Pick+ and one Top Safety Pick, Mazda has won more honors than any other brand.
With five each, compact SUVs, midsize SUVs, and midsize luxury SUVs shared the most Top Safety Pick+ honors per class. The most accolades overall went to midsize luxury SUVs, which also qualified for 12 Top Safety Pick distinctions.
The award category determines the specific criteria, but assessments of various crash protection tests, headlight requirements, and pedestrian front crash prevention systems—which include more stringent requirements for the technology that recognizes and stops for pedestrians in the dark—are all included in both categories.
“There’s still progress to be made in the protection that vehicles provide for their occupants, as the introduction of the updated moderate overlap test shows,” a representative from the non-profit said. “But many of the biggest gains of the future will come from automakers and policymakers, along with all of us as car buyers and drivers, taking steps to protect everyone on the road, not just our own families.”
