If you, like us, have been gushing over all the mint mechanical wonders to grace Geneva, these pieces from Day 3 are sure to win you over. Here are SIHH 2018 entries from Richard Mille, Cartier, Ferdinand Berthoud, and Piaget.
Richard Mille RM 07-01 In Gem-Set Black Ceramic
As the name suggests, a lightly-grainy, black ceramic case uniquely set with diamonds defines this gorgeous Richard Mille. The red gold case has a smooth finish, revealing the titanium CRMA2 caliber, and matching a Onyx and red gold dial. The diamond crown may be a little garish, but the overall sporty chic appeal makes this a sure hit with the ladies. Word is it will be available in fall for a sweet $170,000.
Piaget Altiplano Ultimate Concept
Meet the world's thinnest hand-wound watch. At a mere 2mm, the open-worked case offers a visual depth one would not expect from a piece this flat. Aesthetics aside, we appreciate the engineering ingenuity of Piaget's worm-gear system. It uses the caseback and planes where the dial would usually be as plates and bridges in place of a movement. It's a pity we'll probably never hold or wear it, though, as Piaget's latest remains a concept for now.
Cartier Drive de Cartier Extra-Flat In Stainless Steel And Yellow Gold
We first saw this model last the last SIHH, but this year, Cartier is amping up the appeal of this vintage-inspired piece with two new case options: stainless steel and yellow gold. With a cushion-shaped case that's light on the wrist, this watch measures a lean 6.6mm. A combination of polished curved bezel and lugs with vertically-brushed case gives it just the right amount of shine to complement the sunburst-finished dial. 36-hour power reserve on Cartier Caliber 430 MC and a classic design aficionados can't resist will go for $15,400 this fall.
Ferdinand Berthoud Chronomètre FB-1R.6-1
The novelty of this regulator-type display paired with resistant carburised stainless steel case compels a closer look. An update by all definitions, this piece sports an edgy black, satin-brushed, and rhodium-plated nickel silver dial organised rather interestingly. Look closer for the 18-carat white gold open-worked minutes hand coated in blue CVD, or the FB-T.FC.R chain-and-fusee tourbillon calibre visible through sapphire case-back. Only 20 pieces of these meticulously-created wonders exist.
