BMW Malaysia has recently unveiled two new, locally assembled BMW 5 Series variants in Malaysia, namely the BMW 530e M Sport and the BMW 530i M Sport – thus expanding its portfolio of CKD premium executive sedans in the local market.
Harald Hoelzl, Managing Director of BMW Group Malaysia said, “The upcoming introduction of these two new variants in Malaysia also signifies our commitment towards driving and leading change in the local automotive industry – especially in the electrified segment.
“With our continued investments into electromobility here, we will also further expand our portfolio of locally-assembled vehicles that are valued, both by BMW enthusiasts around the region, and our loyal customers in Malaysia as well,” he added.
The plug-in hybrid and petrol variants share most of their features, though the hybrid does come with a few extra kicks to warrant a bigger price tag.
Dynamic M Sport package
Launching as the seventh generation of the highly successful BMW 5 Series, both the BMW 530e M Sport and the BMW 530i M Sport come fitted with the M Aerodynamics package – characterised by larger kidney grilles, slimmer headlights and the new signature BMW L-shape taillight.
The 530e sports Adaptive LED Matrix headlights in addition to the standard LED headlights, whereas the 530i is equipped with the BMW Laserlight. Subtle details distinguish the variants, such as the BMW Individual high-gloss Shadow Line framing the former, compared to the satin aluminium framing the latter.
Completing the dynamic exterior of both models are new 19-inch M light alloy Y-Spoke 845MBi-Colour Jet Blackwheels with both mixed and runflat tyres, the M Sport brake with blue-painted brake callipers, and double-sided exhaust tailpipe finishers with a trapezoidal design and a distinctive diffuser insert along the rear.
Efficient engine, electric or otherwise
Under their hoods, the two variants are each equipped with the inline four-cylinder BMW TwinPower Turbo 2.0-litre petrol engine, paired with the Eight-Speed Steptronic transmission system. The 530e M Sport also gets the latest generation of the BMW eDrive electric motor to offer a combined maximum output of 292hp and 420Nm of torque, of which 109hp is delivered by the electric motor. This powers the car from 0-100km/h in 5.9 seconds with a top speed of 235 km/h, while only consuming only 2.3l/100km of fuel with a carbon emission of 53g/km.
BMW says the all-electric range is good for up to 67 kilometres (NEDC correlated), just sufficient for city driving and short trips. A full charge with a BMW i Wallbox takes approximately 3 hours and 35 minutes, while standard charging with a conventional main socket takes 6 hours.
On the other hand, the 530i boasts 252hp and 350Nm of torque, allowing it to achieve the century sprint in 6.4 seconds onwards to a top speed of 250 km/h. It consumes 6.7l/100km of fuel with a carbon emission of 154g/km.
Intelligent interiors
Inside, the new 5 Series variants feature an elegant design language with the familiar sportiness of the BMW M Sport family. This comprises the exclusive M leather steering wheel, stylish sport seats for both driver and passenger, as well as interior trim finishers in Aluminium Rhombicle, Dakota Leather upholstery, and the BMW Individual anthracite headliner. Ambient lighting illuminates the cabin, with ample sunlight shining through an additional electrical glass roof exclusive to the 530i.
Both variants come with the BMW Live Cockpit Professional operating the BMW Operating System 7 as standard. Integrated into the restructured, user-configurable 12.3-inch instrument cluster and touchscreen Control Display, it comes with navigation, the BMW Intelligent Personal Assistant, two USB ports and 4G LTE connectivity.
The 530i gets a few key additions, namely BMW Gesture Control, Head-Up Display, BMW Display Key and a 16-speaker, 464-watt Harman Kardon surround sound system (as opposed to the 12-speaker, 205-watt setup in the 530e). Plus, the 530i features an extra Active Cruise Control with Stop&Go function, on top of the standard driving assistance systems such Lane Departure and Lane Change Warning, front collision alert with brake intervention, rear collision prevention and crossing-traffic warning.
The new variants will be available in Alpine White or Carbon Black, paired with either the Black or Cognac Leather Dakota upholstery; or in Phytonic Blue, Sophisto Grey or Bluestone paired with Black Leather Dakota upholstery.
The New BMW 530e M Sport is priced at RM343,000* and the New BMW 530i M Sport is priced at RM396,000* (with SST, on the road, without insurance).
