Peridot is thought to be one of the earliest mined gemstones, dating back to ancient Egypt where it was believed to carry its own light and thus would protect its carrier from evil spirits and nightmares. Nowadays, it is believed to help channel one’s focus and helps its wearer in finding and achieving their purpose.
It is one of the few gemstones that occur only in one colour, green. The intensity of its colour can range from yellow-green to olive green and even deep green with no hints of yellow, which mean they would often be mistaken for emeralds in the older days. Cleopatra is one of the more famously known peridot collectors (most of her jewels that were thought to be emeralds are actually peridot) but the stone reached its height of popularity in Europe during the Victorian and Edwardian eras, when King Edward VII declared the gem as his favourite stone.
One of the most popular peridot pieces in modern history is the Hapsburg Peridot Parure, one of the only royal jewellery sets to feature peridot as its centre gem. The set includes a headpiece, necklace, earrings and brooch and was notably worn by the Archduchess Isabella, Princess of Croÿ in the early 20th century. It was sold off in 2001 to jewellery firm Fred Leighton which often loaned the jewels to celebrities like Joan Rivers who wore it in 2004. The whereabouts of the set are currently unknown after being sold at auction in May 2012.
Though peridot is often overlooked in favour for other green gems, here are some pieces you can own if this dazzling August birthstone has caught your eye.
