When Breguet’s Hora Mundi debuted in 2011, it became an instant success due to its innovative instant-change dual-time display with memory function. Through a brilliant system of cams, hammers and an integrated differential, the watch mechanism calculates the time and date of two different cities in the world at a press of a pusher.
Now, the award-winning mechanical model gets a new interpretation within Manufacture Breguet’s Marine collection that unites ground-breaking technical feats and modern aesthetic invention.
The world on your wrist
The New Breguet Marine Hora Mundi 5557, upon first impression, stuns with its eye-catching dial that depicts the world map through an artful play of superimposed plates and materials. Its intricately crafted dimensions and surfaces are the painstaking result of various treatments and several weeks of work.
A first gold base showcases hand-guilloché waves that gently brush against the continents’ edges, while the abyssal blue sunburst dial base offers the impression of currents in constant motion.
Further enhancing the effect is the additional plate made of sapphire that is composed of the metallised meridians. The continents themselves are treated with horizontal satin brushing and outlined with a subtle metallic turquoise border.
Exuding luxury in every detail, the Marine Hora Mundi 5557’s hours and minutes hands, as well as the hour- markers, are made with luminescent materials for optimum legibility at all hours of the day. Positioned at 4 o’clock, the hand-hammered Sun and Moon are presented in a luminous rose gold and rhodium-plated grey respectively.
Appearing through the 12 o’clock aperture, the date features an additional retrograde hand placed beneath the aperture dial, which uses a rounded U-shaped tip to encircle the date. Meanwhile, the 6 o’clock position displays the cities corresponding to the different time zones, with a metallised anchor above the window pointing to the current chosen city.
A movement for those on the move
The Marine Hora Mundi 5557’s houses the Calibre 77F1, a mechanical self-winding movement with a balance that oscillates at a frequency of 4 Hz. Fitted with an escapement made of silicon, it is resistant to both corrosion and wear, and insensitive to the effects of magnetic fields.
Along with a 55-hour power reserve, the Calibre 77F1 boasts patented additional modules for the dual time-zone mechanism, the second time-zone display, the programmable and reprogrammable mechanical memory wheel and the pointer- type day/night display. The mechanism can be viewed through the sapphire caseback, which is elegantly embellished with Côtes de Genève, guilloché and snailed finishing.
