The new Mercedes-Benz S-Class has finally arrived on Malaysian shores, bringing with it a new benchmark for comfort, safety and design in automotive luxury.
At the launch yesterday, Mercedes-Benz showcased the new S 580 e, featuring a host of new technological innovations that will make for a driving experience like no other.
“The S-Class is the world’s best-selling luxury limousine and we are also pleased that the new S 580 e will be a locally-assembled variant as its predecessor,” shared Michael Jopp, Vice President of Sales and Marketing at Mercedes-Benz Malaysia.
“The vehicle underpins our claim to produce the best automobile in the world. This is where covetable luxury meets the greatest possible safety and highest level of comfort,” he added.
Following a long tradition of executive and luxury models over the last century that have decisively influenced automotive engineering of each era, the S-Class has long stood as the centerpiece of the Mercedes-Benz brand.
Just like its predecessors, the latest S-Class sets a new standard for modern luxury with a host of innovations that attain new heights in interior comfortability, intelligent user experience, and safe driving assistance.
Interactive interiors
Introducing the second generation of the revolutionary MBUX (Mercedes-Benz User Experience), the new S-Class boasts an even more intelligent digital system in its interior.
Up to five large screens, using OLED technology, offer up brilliant displays that make vehicle control and comfort functions easier to access. With the new 3D driver display, drivers of the new S-Class can now access a three dimensional spatial view at the touch of a button.
Additionally, the MBUX Augmented Reality Navigation combines the virtual world with the real world by incorporating graphical navigation instructions and traffic information onto live images so drivers get to their destination safely and efficiently.
While drivers might be familiar with the learn-capable voice assistant, ‘Hey Mercedes’, backseat passengers will now be able to control ‘Hey Mercedes’ from the rear in the new S-Class.
Furthermore, the MBUX Interior Assist uses cameras in the overhead control panel to recognise the needs of the occupants by interpreting head direction, hand movements and body language, and then offering up corresponding vehicle functions.
Comfort is key
To match its technological capabilities, the interior design of the new S-Class integrates elements of interior architecture and yacht design. Large areas of trim in the dashboard and the rear creates a wrap-around effect for passengers, while a reduction in the number of controls adds to its elegant minimalist appearance.
Covered in nappa leather upholstery, the seats bring an air of lightness that invites you to sit and relax. Additionally, a heatable cushion for the head restraint is available at the rear seats for an even more comfortable journey.
Safe travels
In the new S-Class, the driver is offered support through a number of driving assistance systems, which respond to impending collisions for a higher level of safety.
PRE-SAFE® reduces the risk of injury from side-on collisions by pushing the driver or front passenger towards the inside of the vehicle, a mechanism created by the movement of the seat side bolsters in the front backrests.
The world’s first rear airbags can also be found in the new S-Class, built into the back rests of the front seats and ready for deployment should there be a severe front impact. On top of that, the new aluminium hybrid body shell further reinforces the S-Class’ commitment to safety, with its intelligent design providing a higher level of crash safety.
As a plug-in hybrid, the S 580 e has an estimated 100km pure electric driving range. The importance placed on sustainability is also highlighted in the 98 kg of the S-Class’ components that are made from resource-conserving materials. Additionally, the floor coverings are made from ECONYL®, which comes from recovered nylon waste previously bound for the landfill.
