The multi-disciplinary artist will be lending her name and iconic polka dots to the brand’s latest signature vintage, the La Grande Dame 2012.
Renowned Japanese designer Yayoi Kusama has partnered with French champagne house Veuve Clicquot for a limited-edition champagne – and it’s as bubbly as you’d expect. The multi-disciplinary artist will be lending her name and iconic polka dots to the brand’s latest signature vintage, the La Grande Dame 2012.
“It is with its iconic symbols, that Yayoi Kusama adorns La Grande Dame 2012 case and bottle. The opulent flower symbolizes vital energy, love and celebration of life. The polka dots, Yayoi Kusama’s signature patterns are reworked like champagne bubbles to embody La Grande Dame 2012,” the champagne house said in a statement.
Kusama’s staple dotted aesthetic adorns both the bottle label and the collector’s box it arrives in, which also features a graphic floral motif reminiscent of her “Flowers that Bloom at Midnight” series.
In addition to the champagne gift box, the design maverick has created an exclusive hand-painted flower sculpture she calls “My Heart That Blooms in the Darkness of Night”, which doubles as a bottle holder for a magnum edition of the vintage blend. Only 100 such sculptures will be available upon request.
This isn’t the first time the two have come together for a collaboration. Kusama has previously reinterpreted a portrait of founder Philippe Clicquot’s wife, Madame Clicquot, for a charity auction in Tokyo. Likewise, this limited-edition champagne pays homage to the Madame with its label reading: “For background, La Grande Dame (meaning “The Great Lady”) is a champagne created in honor of Madame Clicquot, who trailblazed the industry with her innovations and audacity as a female entrepreneur in the early 1800s.”
The Yayoi Kusama X La Grande Dame 2012 vintage champagne bottles come at a retail price of ¥25,740 or $242 each, whilst the exclusive floral sculpture is priced significantly higher at $36,000. The joint releases will be available for pre-sale from September 17, before hitting shelves in mid-October.
