Porsche and Boeing will be teaming up to create an electric-powered vertical takeoff and landing prototype vehicle.
Just a month after unveiling its newest all-electric car at the Frankfurt International Motor Show 2019, Porsche revealed its plan to take to the skies. The luxury automaker has announced that it will be teaming up with Boeing to build “premium urban air mobility vehicles” or in other words – luxury flying cars.
Via a Memorandum of Understanding, Porsche and Boeing will “explore the premium urban air mobility market and the extension of urban traffic into airspace.”
Boeing, Porsche and Aurora Flight Sciences – a subsidiary of Boeing, are developing a concept for a fully electric vertical takeoff and landing vehicle. The companies and their respective subsidiaries will implement and test a prototype.
Porsche added that the companies will create an international teamed aimed at addressing various aspects of urban air mobility including market potential for premium vehicles and the possibilities of use of these vehicles. According to Detlev von Platen, a member of the Executive Board for Sales and Marketing at Porsche AG, the company plans to partner with Boeing to address a potential key market segment of the future and in the longer term it could move into the “third dimension of travel.”
A study by Porsche Consulting in 2018 found that urban air mobility solutions will be a more efficient and quick mode of transport for passengers compared with the current conventional modes and it can be achieved at a lower cost with greater flexibility. It also forecasted that the urban air mobility market will pick up speed after 2025.
