When Breitling’s Top Time was first launched in the 1960s, its mission, led by Willy Breitling, was clear: to create a range of “ultra-modern chronographs” that suited the needs of a younger demographic. Rather than its usual utilitarian, technical timepieces like the Co-Pilot and Navitimer, Breitling went on to create a sports watch that offered a wide variety of configurations, a friendlier price tag, and a bolder, contemporary look.
Fast forward to today, Breitling has reimagined the Top Time watch and given it a retro spin by collaborating with Australian lifestyle brand Deus Ex Machina. Together with the custom motorcycle and surf outfitter, the new Top Time Deus honours the original 1960s watch while paying tribute to the youthful, nomadic spirit.
A watch that will “appeal to bikers, boarders or backpackers, all looking for freedom to explore the world their own way, at their own pace”, the Breitling Top Time Deus features a 41mm stainless steel case fitted to a brown racing-themed calfskin leather strap – giving it a look reminiscent of vintage motorcycle jackets. Its panda dial no longer sports the standard round counters, and instead gets squircle-shaped ones to contrast with the chronograph’s yellow and orange accents. A vivid orange, lightning shaped hand adds more depth and contrast to the watch’s vintage aesthetic.
On the caseback, Deus’ adage “In benzin veritas” can be found engraved by Deus Creative Director Carby Tuckwell, along with a retro-looking motorcyclist in rally racer mode. Powering the timepiece is Breitling’s COSC-certified chronometer movement Breitling Calibre 23, which offers a power reserve of 48 hours.
Limited to 1,1500 units worldwide, the Breitling Top Time Deus is an online exclusive until 23 March, 2021, and comes with a price tag of RM21,350.
